Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Banks.
Ryan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been performing music since I was really young, maybe 5 or 6. Starting in the 7th grade I was in bands with close friends. This then led up to being more serious about it through high school and college until I graduated the MBUS program at UGA.
In April of 2018 I launched Yellow Roses after a few year of developing the project. The time I spent leading up to being able to finally release the project was well worth the payoff! It’s been nothing but rewarding and has taken me places in the short amount of time I’ve performed under the moniker I honestly always dreamed of.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Since getting Yellow Roses started life’s actually been nothing but amazing. There have certainly been moments of extreme doubt and hardship, but this is hardly unique as those moments and feelings occur with all things in life. Judging struggles would be difficult to do, as if my problems start growing I hope it means everything else is growing too!
Please tell us about Yellow Roses.
Yellow Roses is deeply important to myself. The whole project serves to express musical interpretations of poems my mother wrote, while also incorporating other original works of mine.
At its best, it truly is just an outlet for my music in whatever form that takes.
In November of 2019 I released an ep titled, “Calm” from a poem of the same name. It was short, so I felt having the poem stanzas be the song names would be very interesting. To simultaneously be looking at the track list while also reading the poem seemed beautifully appropriate for that particular project.
I released two singles on Feb. 14th, 2020 that are songs with original lyrics. These kind of speak more to the nature of the project being open and allowing some brevity. To create musical works that aren’t confined to a box is always the goal!
The concept took a while to materialize, and once it did it took another stretch of time to really lock down whether it was a direction I wanted to go. I love highly personal music, and feel so lucky to be in a position to share something in song that means so much to me with my moms poems. This feeling typically brings me back to earth that I made the right decision.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t change a single thing!
