Today we’d like to introduce you to Sahil Mahajan.
Sahil, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started djing about five years ago on my laptop. Then the summer of 2014, I bought a pioneer board and dedicated that whole summer to learn. I immediately started getting gigs that summer. I wasn’t the best DJ yet but I was confident in my taste of music and I always DJ to entertain whatever crowd I have. Now for over three years straight, I DJ about 3-4 gigs a week. All different types of gigs from the bars/clubs to even private events and weddings!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. In this industry, there is competition everywhere and everyone wants to be a DJ. Also, I specialize in hip/hop music and Atlanta is known for that. Now the EDM music community is growing tremendously and I’m behind in that genre. As a DJ you have to be willing to learn every day and be appreciative on any gig you receive. I’m trying to find more gigs on days like Sunday-Wednesday as well. As I’m Currently finishing this interview, I’ve been waiting over an hour in my car just to play at this brunch spot on Sunday. It takes patience and commitment to become successful.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My company is my own LLC under my name, which is Dj Sahil. I also go by another DJ name being DJ Aladdin. I specialize in Hip-hop music. I’m a resident DJ at a bar called Poolhall in Buckhead. I have big crowds come see me every weekend because I played the latest trap music. What sets me apart from other DJs is that I’m willing to admit I’m not the best, so I’m always eager to learn and work hard on my craft every day. Also, I feel like DJs like to play music they like rather than entertaining the crowd that is in front of them. I try to learn all genres of music so I can play for any type of crowd.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment is that I’ve basically played at every bar in Buckhead. Also, I have big crowds every weekend and people that want to come see me, DJ, on a weekly basis. I have even done 15 weddings now too, stepping outside of my comfort zone. Confidence is key, especially in this industry.
