Today we’d like to introduce you to Sakina Garba.
Sakina let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was about seven years old, I began to build a fascination with hair especially when it came down to the different textures that many ethnic groups have. Growing up, I used to watch my mother professionally, braid many women and children’s hair. She learned how to do unique braiding patterns growing up in Nigeria. Watching her influenced me to practice on myself and siblings in which sparked my interest as a young girl. I can remember as my mom braided hair, I’d come behind her and always ask if I could try? She would always tell me to “just watch so that one day I can do it.” in which I did.
When I got to middle school, I started watching YouTube videos I would always put in the search box hair tutorials ranging from sew ins, braids, how to make a wig, and Natural hairstyles. I started making this a religious practice to always try something new in which I spent hours learning and doing hair. As I began highschool in 2015, I started gaining interest in a lot more things such as art and makeup. The art program I was a part of taught me patience, especially when it came down to a technique called stippling. You’re probably wondering what that has to do with beauty or eyelashes. Stippling is similar to lash extensions, it’s a repetition of small dots almost microscopic like lashes in order to fill a picture that would take hours, but the product comes out amazing due to the time given in the picture. I always had a gift with creating with my hands which explains my hands-on services. As I graduated Highschool, I decided to take a lash course in the relationship with what I learned from my art class. I began lashing in 2018 which I continued doing. My lash brand is called Shaco Lashes the concept behind the meaning is to motivate women and men to show off their beauty. The Word Shaco derives from the Yoruba tribe from Nigeria which the meaning is to show off. My biggest goal with the knowledge and experience I have from doing hair and lashes is to aspire to teach young people to find what they love despite the limitation’s life could bring.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road for me, but the road does get clearer when it comes down to lash extensions you have to be aware of the do’s and don’ts. Especially dealing with one of the most sensitive parts of the human anatomy. I make sure that I ask if my client has allergies, and consult them before doing their lashes, which is very important. Also, products that are used can affect your business, so taking precautions, practice, and finding a good product. Is very important in success for your business, and I feel that once you go through the beginning stages and learn from those mistakes, things get much easier with business.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Shaco Lashes and Hair – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Shaco Lashes isn’t your average Lash Extension company our focus is to welcome clients with open arms in a judgment-free zone. Starting with the carefree spirit that many people know me for having I always make sure my client is comfortable and can always talk to me. Our main focus is Customer service we make sure of taking care of our customers to the best of our ability in relation to the services given. We believe in caring for others the way you’d want to be taken care of. In my time of doing lashes, I heard many horrifying stories from clients voicing out how they are treated by other women who do Lash extensions, and other related services.
I had a client mention to me that the glue that was used from a previous lash tech she went to caused her to get a reaction. In which the lash tech had no regard for her well-being, and refused to give her any tips to help the client. This is one example of what will not be tolerated with Shaco Lashes I am always here for my clients no matter what in which they can all say I have which makes me very proud. I specialize in Lash extensions, Frontal sew-ins. Closure Sew ins, Wigs, Custom coloring, braiding, crochet, individual crochet. I also have small services such as eyebrow arching as well.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I have big goals for Shaco Lashes and hair I plan on managing my own salon in 2023 by god’s grace.
