Meet Heather Tucker of Salon Sage in Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Tucker.

Heather, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was always a creative person. I thought I would go to art school, past that, I didn’t know where I would end up. In high school, I started dating this guy who looked so different than me. He had a mohawk, which would change colors every month and a leather jacket with spikes, all the things you take home to meet your parents.

He asked me to help cut and color his hair. I’ve been hooked ever since. I started cutting and coloring my hair and it snowballed into my doing all my friend’s hair. One day, I went to go see my stylist and he suggested that I should go to hair school. I signed up that year, graduated and was on the hunt for my first salon job.

I started at an Aveda Salon, I was getting mentored by some amazing stylists and taking classes at the Aveda Institute. It opened my eyes to natural products and being aware of what we’re using and how it affects our world. After being at large salon for five years, I thought it was time to go on my own. I wanted a quiet and relaxing environment, and I wanted to reflects my style. My relationships with my clients have grown and it feels amazing to get to connect with them more and see them walk out with a new sense of confidence that they can take over the world.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think you can have a smooth road in any career. Being a hairstylist is a hard job, and I’ve always been really hard on myself. Formulations, details, and anything else I would beat myself up. I don’t see it as a negative thing, more of that I hold myself up to a high standard. We are our worse critic, right? I knew when I first started I would be at the lowest on the team, and I would have to prove myself. I’ve always been hungry in this industry, what I’m doing isn’t enough, I want more! Trying to decide to leave my salon of 5 years was scary. I had a full book and friends/stylists I could lean on. Its been seven months since I started Salon Sage and couldn’t be happier, those scary jumps are sometimes so worth it!

Please tell us about Salon Sage.
Salon Sage is the name of my studio salon, I use Davines which is an all natural product and a color line from Italy. I knew I wanted to keep to that promise of taking care of the environment.

I love to do it all! Balayage, vivids, cuts and everything in between. I have a pretty diverse clientele, natural to very edgy. I want to give my clients their dream hair and help them maintain it with great products and education. I love making connections with my clients and making them feel beautiful.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My most fond moments would be visiting my grandmother in Savannah, GA. My whole family would go squeeze in my grandmothers tiny home and we would tell stories, eat amazing Chinese food, and just spend time together. We would visit River Street and get giant caramel apples and walk down the cobblestone streets. My parents would drive us to Tybee Island and smell the ocean air and feel the sand in our toes. Those memories I hold on to, it’s important to slow down once and a while.
