Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Marks.
Sam, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
About 10 years, a good friend asked me to teach a bridge camp for youths during the summer. I had been playing bridge since college and although I was an expert I had never tried teaching. I really enjoyed it. Afterwards, I decided to become a Bridge Teacher.
I started out teaching at Dunwoody United Methodist Church and Temple Sinai. After a few years, it was a full-time job and I looked into opening a full-time Bridge club in Atlanta. There were several already in the Metro Atlanta area, but none inside the Perimeter.
In 2012, I opened the Bridge Club of Atlanta in the Fountain Oaks Shopping Center. We hold duplicate games 7 days a week. In addition to managing the club, I have a full teaching schedule. Classes are held for absolute beginners and for experienced players looking to improve their game.
There is a new beginner class scheduled in January for beginners on Wednesday evenings.
Over the years, the club has grown. We are now the 20th largest club (out of 2900) in North America.
We have a very strong charity program. This past year we raised over $70,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association as part of the Longest Day fundraising event.
Has it been a smooth road?
Finding a location was probably the biggest challenge. And then having to deal with the renovation.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Bridge Club of Atlanta – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as an organization and what sets you apart from others.
WE provide a place for people to play and learn about the bridge. It is a great activity for seniors to keep their mind active. Studies have shown it can help reduce or delay symptoms of dementia.
We are very proud of our partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the people best. A very friendly city.
Hate the traffic.
