Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Wilder.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sam. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always knew that I wanted to pursue a Singing Career but didn’t take the leap of faith until I graduated from High School in 2017. The chorus class was where I always felt at home and the feelings that exploded in my head when I was singing were polarizing. It was hard to concentrate on homework and tests when my days were filled with daydreams of professionally pursuing music.
Being a gay and insecure kid forced me to look into myself and search for things that I loved. Once I discovered my love for Singing, I realized that the road ahead would be difficult. Honestly, as a stubborn and passionate kid, I didn’t care. However, my ideas and dreams were not mirrored by some people that were close to me. Still, I sometimes struggle with the lack of support from people back home.
After I graduated from High School, I moved to Los Angeles and fell into songwriting mode instantly, which I have grown to love more and more as my lyrics are written. Soon after arriving in Los Angeles, I began to perform at open mic nights with friends. Around the same time, I decided to drop out of college to pursue music head-on.
These past few years have honestly melted together, making my life feel like an endless dream. I am extremely excited about my debut Single “House” to be released on March 13th – 2020. The song speaks about my experience with divorce as a kid and how I felt disconnected from the people that were supposed to hold me together. I recorded House in Atlanta, which was amazing. It was a very surreal experience to be recording such a personal song about 20 minutes from my childhood home. There is more music on the Horizon!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have faced many challenges over the past few years, but that’s just something you sign up for when you pursue anything in the Entertainment Field. It is incredibly hard to break your way through the masses of songs being released daily. Rent is also crazy expensive in LA! I grew up knowing that my decision to pursue music would ruffle some feathers in my family and some people expressed their thoughts more vocally than others. However, dealing with this has made me stronger and well equipped to face people that don’t believe in me. Moving to Los Angles was intimidating because I knew that I needed to build a strong friend group from scratch. Thankfully I’ve made many wonderful friends, but it is easy to feel lonely when you live in a huge city like LA.
Please tell us about your music.
I am an Adult Contemporary and Soul Pop Singer/Songwriter. I always wanted to be able to be as self-sufficient as possible when it came to my music. I think it’s important to be able to completely articulate your vision and make it into what you want. I am a certified Graphic Designer, which allows me to create all of my artwork and I am in the process of teaching myself how to produce my music. I’ve spent the last few years teaching myself Piano and guitar as well.
Currently, I am focused on the release of my Single “House”. The most important thing to me is how my music affects people. I want my music to make people feel deeply and thoughtfully, which is what I have kept in mind as I’ve been writing my EP.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I was born in Dunwoody but spent the majority of my childhood life in Sandy Springs. I attended North Springs High School, which was where I discovered my love for music and made some of my best friends. I created a singing group with my friends Myron and Chase, which we called “The Trio.” We were known for performing covers of Hallelujah and Imagine at our Chorus concerts.
I performed at the Lemonade Days Festival and other gigs around Sandy Springs. I never got the best grades, so I had to find other things to set me apart. HAHA. I used to spend hours every day teaching myself how to sing and perform. I remember listening to Jessie J and trying to mimic her vocal runs until I was able to do them myself, which I still do to this day.
