Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Kallal.
Hi Samantha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started in photography as a child, taking pictures of pets, friends and anything that caught my eye. As I grew up, I began learning more about photography and using it not only as a creative outlet for myself, but as a way to immortalize the smallest moments. I spent years learning and growing as a Wedding photographer, then when the inevitable burnout hit, I switched gears to something that required even more learning, Newborn photography. That blossomed into offering Cake Smash sessions, baby sessions and of course Maternity portraits. As my tiny clients grew, those sessions they returned for became Family sessions and eventually Senior portraits. Now, I offer a wide range of sessions in studio and on location for almost everything.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, which I think most small business owners would understand. There are challenges related to finances, imposter syndrome, and work/life balance. Finding the time to devote 100% of what is needed to help a business thrive, while devoting 100% of yourself to being a wife and mom is mathematically impossible. Something always has to give. One of the more recent struggles has been starting over after relocating to the Atlanta area. I had a well-established set of clients, and a thriving business before we moved to be near family. Starting from scratch to gain new clients is a steep uphill battle in a struggling economy but the path is still forward. The end result is still worth the effort.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in my Maternity, Newborn and Cake Smash portraits in studio. I think what sets me apart from others in the field is that I love using color and themes. I create custom setups for both newborns and cake smash sessions based on the clients’ requests. Usually, they answer a few questions, and I let my creativity run wild making setups that are unique and beautiful, so each client feels it was created for them.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Since arriving in Atlanta, I have loved exploring places I haven’t been to in years or ever before. Current obsession is all the waterfalls I can shoot at around the West Georgia area. My kids are obsessed with the Aquarium and finding new fun places to eat.
I am going to now say the one thing you all knew was coming… the thing I like least about living in Atlanta…. the TRAFFIC! Oh, my goodness, I knew it was bad here but is 285 ever not backed up and why is there a high-speed chase down I-20 every single day?
