Today we’d like to introduce you to San Exantus.
Hi San, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It’s San! After God, music makes up the fabric of my very existence.
I sing, write, rap, play piano, sax & a little guitar. I’ve been trying my hand at recording since 2016 but I’ve loved music since I can remember. I was the loudest three years old singing in church with all my heart. My journey began with two ancient iPhones (you know, the ones with home buttons wire headphones). I’d use one phone to play a beat in my headphones & the other to record on the Voice Memos app. I’d record in the tiny downstairs shoe closet hoping my mom wouldn’t hear me and get mad. I would do this over and over for 2-3 hours just to get 5 minutes of me singing & and then edit on a PC rigged to my TV monitor with three different bootlegged DAWs, HDMI Cords & endless trial and error. The result? My first “album” on SoundCloud titled ‘INDIGLO’ which generated a few thousand plays and immense love. I still remember posting my first song on SoundCloud to this day and how amazing it felt to see strangers actually cared to listen… and get this they didn’t just care- they liked it! Six years later, I’ve written more songs than I can count. I’ve faced a lot of difficulties and even been depressed along the way because as you may know dreams don’t pay bills but that’s a whole interview in itself. What matters is that I’m still here. It’s deeper than the music. I’m not an unsure, anxious introvert anymore who just sings in church or plays piano sometimes. This journey has helped me develop a sense of confidence and identity. I am San: Artist, Musician, Model, and Actress and everything else I will become as I continue to pursue my passions.
I create for anyone and everyone that feels how I feel but don’t have the words or voice to express it. The happy, sad, hopeless, lonely, careless, nervous, confident, cocky, the good guys the bad guys, the hipsters and trap gods, the lovers and the losers- I’ve got a song for all of them because at some point or another I was or am one of them. I exist to bring fresh representation to this universal collective journey we call life and spread some love while I’m at it, one record at a time.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been far from smooth. One of the biggest things in the beginning was just sheer inexperience. My mom was super conservative and religious so I wasn’t introduced to much outside of Gospel music and Haitian music. I didn’t know any artists or engineers and I didn’t know anything about the culture or the industry that I was gearing towards so I had to figure out a lot of stuff on my own when I realized music was my passion. Money was also a big struggle, I’d often be stuck between “Make money & be miserable” or “Make music & be broke”. Obviously those aren’t the only options but with no car, no mentor, no understanding of the world and no money I felt the pressure to just finish school and get a job like I was ‘supposed to’.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Simply put, I’m a lover of the arts. Everything I do is geared towards artistic expression. I am primarily an artist and musician so I write and perform my own music but I write and produce for others as well. I also record (just myself for now) and am learning to engineer so that I can make my own beats from scratch. I do gigs playing the piano and guitar with my sister occasionally but most of my current work actually comes from acting! I’m very proud to be able to say that because I’d learned to love acting while still in high school thanks to an amazing teacher. I’ve been opening myself up to the possibilities of my potential beyond music and God has actively responded. When the thought occurred to me, I acted on it- literally. I both model and act in the Atlanta area and am blessed to meet many amazing people who like myself wear many hats. I hope to be known for spreading God and genuine love through art and experience.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
One of my favorite feelings is being able to make someone smile or feel better. Ever since I was a little girl in church, I started to notice that music could do that and I carry that with me now. Seeing people succeed and overcome hardship is another thing and time with my family also brings me a special joy because none of our family lives in Georgia and some are overseas so it’s rare that I see them. The feeling I get when I finish a song and I get that email from my engineer few hours later might be my favorite though. I’m usually in the car and when I hit play, it’s like I can see the whole world stops for a moment and I just listen and I know that I’m going far.
