Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Wright.
Sandra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
First of all, I got fired from my job, fraudulently. I was an HR interim director and I found out one of the people that had been hired was not qualified. This person was someone that was related to the CEO. I eventually talked to EEOC and others about this; however, there was much coverup. With all the coverup, it led to me being put on administrative leave and then let go. Fortunately, I had a friend that worked with me that was a good friend of the VP of the New York Times newspaper group, which led to my first contract. What a way to start the entrepreneurial bug. The rest is history. I have never looked back.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. This is a relationship, and with any relationship, there are ups and downs. One of my main struggles are competing in a predominately male environment (especially white males). Additionally, not knowing my self-worth at first. I was mentored by a male who later became one of my dearest friends. He asked me once, what do you charge for your workshops/speaking engagements? I gave him a figure, and he stated, I ask for twice that much. He went on to say next time– ask for twice that much and see what happens. Always allow for negotiation. If you start low, it is extremely hard to ask for more–not true negotiation. BUT, if you start on the HIGH END, you have something to negotiate with at the time. REMEMBER THAT, he said.
