Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Holland.
Jason, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got started doing photography while in college. I was majoring in graphic design and took two film courses and fell in love with photography. Since then friends and strangers alike have given me some huge photography opportunities, from shooting at weddings to sporting events to concerts.
Has it been a smooth road?
Well, I don’t think anyone has the perfect scenario, but having friends in bands or friends getting married has been a huge advantage as far as getting work. I’d say having strep throat and still Showing up and shooting an exclusive golfing event in Augusta at the masters this past year was a struggle. Lol. I wasn’t contagious anymore but felt like death and barely had the energy to hold up my huge telephoto lens. Not wanting to disappoint my clients, I somehow powered thru.
Is there some part of you work that is particularly difficult?
The hardest part about my job is scheduling. On top of doing photography, I work another job which sometimes can conflict with my photography schedule. Other than that, probably dealing with an occasional difficult client who is determined to control everything, rather than let me guide them in the direction that I think they’d be happier with.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
There are two criterias that I think define success: 1. Am I doing what makes me happy and 2. Am I having to book stuff that I don’t necessarily want to do? If so then, keep working until I can pick the jobs I think best fit me. If I can keep those two things in check then that is the recipe for success
So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
Well, I’m planning to do an exhibit/photography book. I’m excited about that, but it is all still a work in progress. Also, I am probably gonna start doing photography full time and quit my other job within the next year.
