Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Cunningham.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Food has always been a big part of my life, whether cooking, eating at famous establishments, visiting my favorite spots, or anything in between. I started my food Instagram a couple of years ago in college. At the time, it was a joint account with my best friend/roommate. However, once COVID hit, it was challenging to maintain a joint account in different locations. Nevertheless, we managed it as best as possible and surprisingly grew quite a lot since we decided to take it more seriously. At the same time, I thought it would be best to create my own account to document my food journey around Atlanta. The transition from a joint account to a solo account wasn’t much different since I learned so much the first time. With social media algorithms, it can be tricky to navigate, but I don’t let it get to me and just post content I am proud of. Looking back at where I was when I started versus now, I feel like there’s somewhat of a difference, but I am still the same person. Yes, I’ve learned more about social media, photography, and videography, but I still love learning about food and how it connects with people. I feel like I have grown and developed myself due to the various experiences I’ve been through; meeting new people, dealing with tough situations, and figuring out the vision of my brand. Additionally, I’ve become more confident with my content and networking with people.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve done so far and have no complaints. There have been uncomfortable situations and awkward encounters, but I wouldn’t say they affected me. As for social media algorithms, that’s another story… For anyone on social media, I bet you can agree the algorithms are wack and hopeless to figure out. As I mentioned earlier, I don’t look at those sorts of things anymore and just post what I want.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My account consists mainly of food in Atlanta. However, when traveling, I also love posting food from other cities.
I am most proud of a lot of my behind-the-scenes photos/videos. I have a ton of fun filming it and love seeing how dishes are made. I think that’s something that sets me apart. It can be a bit difficult to access the kitchen, but when I can, I love it. I also hope to do more kitchen shots of the chefs to capture the kitchen environment.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m a big YouTube watcher – I watch it more than TV streaming services. Obviously, food videos are something I watch continuously. Literally, my whole home feed is of food (cooking videos, mukbangs, chef interviews, etc.).
I also like listening to podcasts. For food-specific podcasts, I love The Dave Chang Show, Special Sauce with Ed Levine, and the Sporkful.
As for creating content, I kind of just follow what’s on my feed or explore page. Being a consumer of your content is extremely helpful since you’re in with the trends. I’ll usually just scroll, and if I like something, I’ll save it for inspiration.
