Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Kathryne Isbell
Hi Sara Kathryne, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Sara Kathryne Isbell and I am a contemporary artist from Marietta, Georgia. I graduated from nursing school at Samford University in 2020 and began my career as a Registered Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It was such a blessing caring for babies and families during some of their most vulnerable moments, and I loved using arts and crafts to celebrate big milestones as well! As a night shift RN, my “off-nights” consisted of creating paintings for friends and family – Houses, dogs, family portraits, you name it! It was a way for me to spread joy and love with those around me in that season of my life.
My husband, Brett, is also a Registered Nurse which allowed us to sync up our work schedules and travel the world as much as possible in our early 20’s! I soaked up inspiration everywhere we went and possessed a deep admiration for the architecture and culture of each destination. I sketched out all of my “art ideas” on anything from hotel notepads to plane napkins, and translated those ideas into paintings when I got home. After being asked by a family member to commission my first abstract piece, I knew I had found my true passion!
I’ve always loved art. Growing up, my parents sacrificed a clean home most Saturday mornings as my sister, Olivia, and I rummaged through the distinguished “art cabinet” our mom and dad made for us; Full of pompoms, pipe cleaners, sparkle glue, felt paper and sequins – It was every kid’s dream! We woke up early to watch reruns of Bob Ross on PBS before the “kids shows” came on – I laugh at what old souls we were! Painting with her is truly my favorite past time, and a tradition we try to build into our adult lives today.
During COVID, I heard The Lord say to me, “I will bless your art.” I was not sure what that meant as a new-grad nurse at the time, but I see now that He gifted me these hands to be used as a vessel for healing. I was able to aid in healing the body through my nursing career, and now I get to aid in healing the soul through my art career. I feel humbled that my husband and family have been first in line to support me in my journey to become a Professional Artist. When you are surrounded by a community of people who truly want to see your dreams realized as much as you do, it is a gift never to be taken for granted.
When Brett and I finally planted roots in my hometown after years of travel, I began exhibiting my artwork at Scott’s Antique Market, a popular show here in Atlanta. It was there that I was able to connect with several award-winning Interior Designers that I have had the honor of commissioning paintings for. Last July, I officially took the leap to become a full-time artist and have never been happier! I believe I connect with my collectors through our shared love of transitional design and the story behind my art. Using acrylic, ink and oil pastel, I strive to create paintings that achieve the perfect balance of traditional elegance and modern refinement, bringing warmth, meaning and life to every space!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a relatively smooth road as I have sought out lots of help along the way! In January 2024, I attended The Southern Coterie Summit in Sea Island, GA, a retreat for female entrepreneurs. It was there that I was surrounded by a multitude of women who were building successful businesses, managing a strong work-life balance and were committed to constantly improving. It was there that I truly learned the value of relationships with fellow business owners despite the field you are in, as we all face similar struggles and can always learn something from one another. A couple months later, I found Hayley Price, a business coach for artists. I began 1:1 mentorship with her, and also joined her Art Coaching Club! Through this group, social media connections and mutual friends, I have found the most incredible community of like-minded small business owners and friends for life! Surrounding myself with a trusted group of mentors and peers has been an invaluable part of my business. I wish I could write down the full list of every person who has helped me get where I am today – The names are countless and I am forever grateful for the people around me!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a contemporary artist specializing in creating paintings that are equally modern and traditional in style using a combination of acrylic, ink and oil pastel. I am known for turning transitional design into artwork and am most proud of the “signature look” of my work – One that reflects my love of bringing together classic elements with a touch of the unexpected. The geometric outline in the background of my paintings brings modern refinement to each piece, while my abstract take on the staple floral brings traditional elegance to my art. I worked hard to find the style that was 100% “me,” and I believe I have finally found the look that is both daring and timeless all in the same breath.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about our city is the unmatched support of our community! I had my first ever art party for the launch of my Spring Collection at Saint & Goldie in Marietta at the beginning of March, and I welled up with “happy tears” as I saw neighbors, family friends, childhood teachers, as well as old and new friends pile in one-by-one. My parents always said, “It takes a village to raise a child,” and that it does, but it’s funny how that principle translates into adulthood as well. Our city provides the opportunity to be whatever you want to be, and I truly attribute that to the willingness to help and outpour of love from its people. With endless networks and avenues for connection, I would not be where I am today without my Atlanta community! My least favorite part of our city is the traffic, as it does inhibit the convenience of seeing some friends as often as I’d like to. However, I see it as a blessing that so many people get to call Atlanta home, and I am very thankful to be one of them.
