Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Gearhart
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always had a love of arts and crafts, and I’ve always used crafting as a way to deal with my stress. I started Gearhart Design Co. during Covid when I was stuck at home and needed a distraction from everything terrible going on around me. I had previously made wooden signs as a side project, and I decided to start back up. I needed a creative outlet, and I had all the supplies, so I just went for it!
I had gotten into digital lettering for my signs, so my sister asked me to try my hand at making greeting cards. I ended up loving the process, so I started making more cards, and eventually, stickers. I brought both of these items with me to art markets, in addition to my typical wooden signs, and everyone was gravitating towards these new items. I was making more money selling $3 cards than I was $30 signs.
Eventually, I decided to phase out signs and focus on stationery goods. I found them more enjoyable to make, and they were a more unique product. Everything I make is something I personally love and enjoy, and I try to make things that you’re not going to find everywhere. I also make everything myself from start to finish, so that I can ensure the best possible quality.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Running your own business is never easy. I’ve had to learn how to manage my time and not overwork myself, which is a constant struggle for me. I try to get all the things done all at once, but obviously that’s not possible. It gets overwhelming, and when I get overwhelmed, my tendency is to shut down. Then I have to deal with getting the motivation to get back to work, which is a whole other struggle.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make digitally drawn cards, stickers, notepads, and art prints. All of my items are made completely by me, from the drawing to the printing, and I try to make designs that are not only funny and unique, but relevant to the time.
I also teach painting classes, which I’ve started to do more of over the last year. I love teaching these classes because I get to share my love of art, and I’ve gotten to know so many wonderful people in the community!
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I don’t know what the future of the stationery industry holds, but I hope it grows! When I first thought about making cards, I thought “no one gives out cards anymore!” But I was proved wrong, and I’m so thankful for that! I think there’s nothing better than randomly getting a card in the mail, and if I can help bring joy to someone, then I know I’ve done my job.
