Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Jordan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, I guess it truly started when I was a child. However, I didn’t put two and two together until I became a mom. I loved being a mom, I was happy raising my little family, burning grill cheese, the never ending piles of laundry and dishes. If you go back to the myspace days, I used to take pictures of my kids with my little Kodak point in shoot and upload. I started to get compliments here and there. I think more than anything, I realized I had always had a love for making pictures. I remember my husband and I, would browse through pawn shops and just look at DSLR’s and I was fine with that. Just browsing, I mean after all I had no plans on becoming a “real” photographer. Besides, we didn’t have much and surely we couldn’t spare the money for a camera anytime soon.
But then one day, maybe 6 months or so later, my husband came home and surprised me with a Canon XTI and he said to me (I’ll never forget these words because they still haunt and excite me to my core to this very day). “Now, this is an investment, you have to make this money back” I was terrified, I mean who would PAY ME to take their pictures? In fact, I had never even finished my 9th grade year. Not because I wasn’t smart, but more because school just wasn’t made for people like me. I didn’t have an academic bone in my body. To be perfectly honest, I was fine with that. Anyway, the days and months that followed were spent with endless nights researching and learning all I could about any and all things that interested in me in the photography world. Dressing my kids up and forcing them to be my models. You name it, I did it. I signed up for every forum and CC group I could find. I shot for about a full year without charging people at all. It was the perfect way to gain knowledge and real world experience. That was it. I had found my calling, the career I never knew I’d have. I was head over heels in love with it. I had something that was all my own. Something no one could take away from me.
Fast forward about 8 years later, I sometimes have to pinch myself because I cant believe I get to do what I love and make good money doing it. For me though, it’s about way more than the money. I get to share in peoples lives, I get to show people themselves, how beautiful they are, I get to leave little pieces of me in so many places. Telling a story and freezing a moment in time and handing it over to it’s owner NEVER gets old!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth wouldn’t be the word at all. It’s a constant struggle. There is SO much information out there and you can get really overwhelmed fast. If you start to compare yourself to others instead of letting them inspire you to grow it can be tortuous. I’ve had many failures, however I have also had many successes! I think the hardest part for me was finding my true niche and sticking to it. Establishing my style or look as well my brand. Once I settled there it has just been amazing.
Sarah Jordan Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a lifestyle family and wedding portrait artist/storyteller. I get to tell your story. I have one of the most important jobs in the entire world. Documenting lives and sharing those moments that will last forever. I think what would set me apart from others would be that I’m a dreamer, I create, I’m inspired by real life, real people. My heart is 100% fully invested in my job/art.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career? Wow, that’s a hard one. I’d say it’s the few times I’ve woken up to messages on my IG, email or Facebook inbox being asked by complete strangers if I’d mentor them! To me, that means something so huge, I can hardly put that into words. Follow your heart and you’ll always find your way.
