Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Mcgarl
Hi Sarah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Sarah McGarl. My journey into the world of children’s consignment began 15 years ago when I was pregnant with my son. A girlfriend took me to a local church consignment sale, and I was frustrated with the lack of organization. Despite the huge selection, I didn’t buy anything. It felt like a junky garage sale with low-quality items, and I realized I was more of a boutique shopper. So, I headed to a children’s boutique store in Buckhead and bought two pieces of clothing, spending over $250. My budget quickly told me that I was not a boutique girl after all.
I dreamed of creating a better solution for moms. That dream became a reality when I opened the doors to Rhea Lanas of North Atlanta in the Spring of 2010.
With a background in business and a passion for helping moms on a budget, I launched my franchise with a mission: to offer families in the Atlanta area an upscale shopping experience and to always take care of my consignors. I had no idea what I was getting into, but God had a plan!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been challenges along the way. In 2019, the Department of Labor ruled that consignment sales could no longer operate with volunteers. As a result, I had to adapt by transitioning to W-2 seasonal employees and learning all the relevant employment laws. Today, we have a team of 95 seasonal employees.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are Atlanta’s largest children’s consignment event with over 1000 families consign over 125,000 items. We carry infant to junior clothing, toys, baby gear (Strollers, high chairs, pack and plays, swings, etc.)
We are a bi-annual event in the Perimeter area of Atlanta. It is a great opportunity for families to come purchase all the brands they love for a fraction of the retail price.
What makes our Children’s Consignment different?
We guarantee our items. If you consign an item, we will pay you for it if it is missing on consignor pick up day.
Our average consignor makes over $600.
Our average shopper saves over $500.
We host a free foster family shopping day and all items are free for foster families.
We email our consignors their check the day after our final sale day.
Our store looks like a boutique and we pride ourselves on making sure every item is up to our quality standards.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am not a thrifter. I love Nordstrom and stores that have a boutique feeling. I think that is why Rhea Lana’s of North Atlanta is loved by so many. I want our store to feel like a department store and not a thrift store.
