Meet Sean Smith of Dj Sway in Metro Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Smith.

Sean, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always had a love for music, especially hip hop. Being born and raised in Atlanta, GA my interest grew for music as the music industry expanded around me… Throughout my middle and high school years, I was known for hosting parties whether it was huge birthday events, house parties, kickbacks or small parties. When it came to the music, I always wanted control cause I knew the right songs to play that would get the party started and keep it going but the thought of being a DJ never crossed my mind.

Once I graduated from high school, I attended Virginia State University. Before the music, I was a football and basketball athlete. I’ve played the game all my life and in college, it brought me closer to becoming the pro athlete I dreamt of. No matter the sport I was determined and knew I was going to make it so a backup plan was never a thought. Moving forward to my senior year, I experienced a horrible injury during my football season and the recovery took much longer than expected. Although I made a name for myself as a contender for what I thought would be a sure plan to a position on a professional level sports team, I was set back by those injuries.

After graduating college I came home and started working. Throughout that time, my mom started a business providing an event space which has been successful for more than five years (Mbrace Moments) where she hosts weddings, birthday parties, baby showers, etc. While working, I utilized some of my free time to assist her with different events she held. During her events she would request outside DJs to come and I would observe their techniques, the music selections, and what equipment they used. I always asked questions as well as if I could try for myself. I then thought that this may be a journey I should take and invest myself in, being an event DJ for not only my mother’s event space but catering to all of Atlanta and surrounding areas.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One challenge that I’m sure many face in any industry as well as myself is self-promotion. Atlanta is a continuously growing city and known for having many Djs. It’s pretty much who you know at times but I haven’t let that stop me. If anything this obstacle has pushed me to use my networking skills and promote myself more than ever and as a result I’ve been booking consistent gigs, gaining new customers and plan to continue.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a local and traveling Dj in the metro Atlanta area. I have been Djing for over two years now specializing in all events such as weddings, birthdays, business events, baby showers, school events, holidays events and much more. What I’m most proud of is my growth from when I first began to now but I know there is a lot more to learn. The more I continue to promote myself and learn from each event the more I will continue to get better.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moments is when I receive positive feedback from my clients praising me for a job well done and referring me to other clients. Being a mobile Dj needs to be comfortable with taking requests and sometimes even an entire playlists. That way you can play various styles and songs that fit the guest’s requests or client’s playlist. The best thing about being a Dj is making people happy. It’s nothing like seeing people get on the dance floor and the expression on their faces when they hear the song they love.
