Meet Sean Standberry of LYFE Marketing in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Standberry.

Sean, please share your story with us.
Ever since I was young I remember visioning myself becoming a business owner. Even before there was glamour in becoming an entrepreneur. So for me, the question never was if I would build a business, but rather what kind of business I would build.

LYFE Marketing was founded by Sean Standberry, Sherman Standberry, and Keran Smith. We came to the realization that marketing had changed. We clearly notice a trend of people using online channels vs traditional channels to become aware of new products/services. Surprisingly in 2011, many senior marketing managers refused to acknowledge this trend thus giving us an opportunity to attack a growing industry.

One of our first clients was a student housing property in Atlanta and we helped them explode on social media. They were able to get 100% leased in the shortest time span in their property’s history. That same company expanded us throughout their portfolio of properties throughout the United Staes which gave us the capital we needed to seriously grow the business.

Today, we actively work with over 250 small businesses helping them to grow their business online. We acquired strong skills in all forms of digital marketing and have helped companies grow from 0 to 7 figure dollar businesses.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have had plenty of obstacles getting started and continue to face challenges today. The obvious challenge, in the beginning, was figuring out how to acquire quality clients. We attended a lot of events and worked really hard on the clients we had to build referrals. However, the business did not grow as fast as we wanted. Then a light bulb went off to use our own services to build our business. Something that seemed so obvious looking back, but surprisingly many marketing agencies don’t use their own services to grow.

One of the second early challenges was finding good talented people. Since we are completely bootstrapped, we were thin for capital thus did not have high compensation and benefits to easily attract talent. We constantly struggled with keeping good people until we created a buy-in approach with bonuses and incentives that kick in as the company grew.

Today, our biggest challenge is managing growth while still maintaining a quality service.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about LYFE Marketing – what should we know?
We help small businesses generate more traffic, leads, and sales. People describe us a digital marketing company, but we think of ourselves as good people who help small businesses grow. We are known for social media marketing services as this was the first service our company launched and conquered. However, we are also very skilled in SEO, SEM, Email marketing, blogging and more.

We are most proud of our ability to help small business grow. We have help companies who have generated very little revenue build to 6-7 figures revenue.

Today, we have 26 employees and serve 258 small businesses. We have also recently launched our first subsidiary company called LYFE Accounting which will help businesses grow through making smarter financial decisions.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We believe the key to us building a multi-million agency has been our willingness and open-mind to trying new things. We spend little time pondering if an idea will work and simply go for it. Everything we do is thought of as a “test” and if it works then great. If not, then we move on to our next “test”.

It sounds generic, but learning from our failures (or failed tests) have really shaped our success. Our marketing team has a strong understanding of what type of things work and do not work because more than likely we have tried it.
