Meet Selena Britton of CustomCrowns

Today we’d like to introduce you to Selena Britton.

Selena, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I remember around 10 or 11yrs old I would watch my mother style her hair and always asked her to teach me how to braid my dolls hair. One day I sat down and taught myself how to do a regular single braid and from there it sparked a passion for hairstyling. Later on during my high school years I had taken cosmetology from 10th-12th grade. After completing high school I decided to join the U.S. Army where I had served for a total of 8yrs. During that time I couldn’t shake the idea of what my true calling a passion which was literally anything pertaining to hair and beauty. At the 8yr mark in my military career it became crunch time to make a decision of if I wanted to stay in and serve or take a leap of faith and follow my dreams. I took that leap! I stepped out on faith and enrolled into Paul Mitchell Honolulu to refresh and expand my cosmetology skills. From there I had the inspiration of starting my own custom wig and extension line. With attending school from 9-4pm and servicing clients I had little to no time to style my own hair but I still wanted something nice and quick that I could literally pop on and go! With that in mind I decided to explore the options of wigs and wig making. Everywhere I’d go ladies would complement my hair and couldn’t believe it was a WIG! From that point on I found myself flooded with requests from ladies wanting to have the convenience of a beautiful style without the commitment. With the climate of the hair industry changing, wearing wigs for an everyday lifestyle wasn’t taboo anymore! In fact, it was embraced by not just ladies dealing with multiple varieties of hair loss but also by women simply wanting to switch up their style without the long sitting time and tension of a sew-in. Crown holders are able to customize their look down to every intricate detail including the density, hair color, cap sizing, styling etc.

With passion, determination and a quality product I’ve been able to service returning clients spanning all over the world from places like Hawaii, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Korea, United States and all over Europe. I’ve also been able to travel and tour cities and hold classes in my hometown of Montgomery, Alabama on how to install our CustomCrowns flawlessly! I’m truly thankful for every client that has unknowingly pushed me just a little bit closer to my dreams. I owe it all to God for how much my company has grown and the new heights we’re aiming towards.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This road has come with bumps and bruises along the way. There has been the common struggles of a small business getting off the ground with building a brand and being able to fund the brand. I tell anyone that building an HONEST and TRUSTWORTHY brand will have you taking the long hard route instead of the easy shortcut. It’s been times of cleaning out my accounts to spend on inventory, packaging and various advertisement material. I can say all of the struggles make you so much stronger as a business owner and gives you a new perspective on how much is really put into even the smallest of businesses. Through all of those trials the biggest trial was finding passion to even continue what I love after the sudden death of my mother. She had always been my biggest supporter and wanted to see me succeed no matter what I wanted to do in life. Now without my best friend by my side cheering me on I was so confused on what I wanted out of life. I took a brief break just to digest how my life had changed. After realizing that my mom wouldn’t want me to sit around sad, depressed and spiraling downhill I chose to get back up and turn my pain into purpose! There’s a reason why God chose me be able to bear now both of my parents being deceased at a fairly young age.
