Meet Shahedah Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shahedah Williams.

Hi Shahedah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got my start in fashion at a young age. I was inspired by my grandmother in Trinidad who also was a designer. She began showing me how to sew from a very young age. So when it was time for me to make a decision about what college I wanted to go to I decided to select Moore College of Art and design and Major in Fashion Design.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are daily struggles for me sometimes, I feel like I’m an underdog who has so much to prove. This only makes me stronger and more resilient. When one door shuts, I just work to build my own door and be my own opportunity.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Black girl Philanthropist, a Fashion and Costume designer, and a Creative Director. For the last 10 years of my career, I have built myself up in both the corporate and indie fashion spaces. As an indie designer, I created my Brand Butterfly Ave where I design swim and resort-style clothing for women. I also design costumes for carnivals and other purposes. My Caribbean roots and my upbringing inspire my esthetics. Outside of my brand, I have a nonprofit called Prom Scholar. We are a scholarship program dedicated to raising funds for first-year of college needs and funding our selected scholar’s prom needs. We make custom suits and gowns for those selected student as well.

What matters most to you? Why?
Integrity matters most me as an artist and entrepreneur because I feel like it so important to appreciate those who engage with my work.
