Meet Shakita Byrd of SYB Hair Salon in Edgewood-Reynoldstown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shakita Byrd.

Shakita, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love for hair started at the age of 13 which led me to pursue a cosmetology career. I received my license is 1998 and with a HUGE help from my parents in 1999, my brother and I opened our first Beauty/Barber Shop, which still exists today. Although I am not there, it still exists and my brother is still operating it. In 2013, I begin to feel stagnant so I branched off and opened my own salon in 2014, stayed there for three years, closed down and moved to a Salon Loft and it was the best move ever! About a year before I closed, I started to rebrand myself as a short hair specialist which turned my whole hair game around and I became happier in my field than I have ever been! Don’t get me wrong, I was always happy and loved what I do but this love was on a whole new level.

Has it been a smooth road?
Of course not, lol! I feel like some of my struggles were trying to have a good balance between work and home because I was a mother and wife and I am very supportive of my family so I juggled my schedule around to accommodate them until they graduated, it wasn’t easy but I did it and I will still continue to do it until my last one graduates in five years. Another struggle was trying to maintain between slow periods, industry transitions and learning the importance of social media, branding, and marketing when it took a turn for the better but through educating myself by attending classes, doing research and talking with different people I made it through.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a hairstylist that specializes in short hair and have mastered the art of cutting and styling. I am known for my cuts, styling, professionalism, great customer service and giving my clients/guest an experience to remember. I am most proud of the tremendous growth of my business as I began to rebrand myself as a short hairstylist. I aim to please each client that sits in my chair, I listen to their wants and match them with my expertise to assist them with achieving their hair goals. Customer service is my top priority and I set the tone for that when they walk through my door because it’s all about them!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely! Atlanta is a city that continues to grow by leaps and bounds and it will not stop any time soon. Atlanta is definitely a good place to start out because it’s very diverse and there is so much room for growth for anyone that has the mentality, drive, and ambition to want more for themselves and their business.
