Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaman Tomecas.

Shaman Tomecas

Hi Shaman, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into the work of birth began at nine years old. My aunt was expecting her 4th child, and she desired for me to be present with her throughout her pregnancy journey to birth.

When her labor began, I supported her throughout, and when the baby came, my hands were blessed with my first catch right after my 10th birthday. From that moment on, I was called Midwife by my family.

After supporting numerous of women in my family as well as friends, I decided to step fully in my calling by becoming a Certified Nurse Midwife. I received my BSN in Nursing, and while working in labor and delivery, I realized that being a Certified Nurse Midwife wasn’t for me.

I searched to find Black Traditional Midwives in Georgia but was unsuccessful. However, I came across doulas online and decided to start there. Once I received my doula training and certification with DONA(Doulas of North America) and The Matrona (Holistic Doula), I knew that was the gateway to bring me back to my original blueprint of my soul’s purpose of Midwifery.

While attending numerous of births from hospitals, birth centers, and homebirths as a doula, I apprenticed with Traditional Midwives and became a Midwife Assistant for a CNM in a total of three years combined. I answered the call again and fully stepped back into God’s work of Traditional Midwifery.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When there’s a calling in your life, it’s never a smooth ride. There are always obstacles in the way. There are people that see your greatness yet will cloud your vision in hopes you don’t get ahead. Especially those that look like you. However, that should not determine your gift. It gets better when you accept it fully. Trust and know that there’s a higher power that will align you where you need and deserve to be. Just step into it, and it’s smooth sailing from there.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
