Meet Shameka Landers of Landers Accounting & Tax Service

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shameka Landers.

Hi Shameka, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I became a mother at 15. By the age of 19, I had two children, and by 21, I was raising three. My journey into accounting began at 19 when I started preparing tax returns for myself and family members while attending college.

In 2007, I moved to Georgia with my best friend and began working in the accounting department of a law firm. While I continued preparing taxes for friends and family on the side, I discovered a true passion for accounting during that time. Despite wearing many hats and contributing far beyond my role, I soon realized I was being underpaid and undervalued. Determined to find something better, I left the firm and accepted a bookkeeping position with a small development company in Buckhead.

After just three months, the company’s CPA approached me and said, “Shameka, you’ve caught on so quickly. Everything is always ready and perfect when I arrive — have you ever thought about starting your own bookkeeping business?”

At 24, I had recently purchased my first home with my daughters’ father and was raising three children far from family support. The thought of starting a business terrified me. I feared failure and doubted whether I could handle the responsibility of business ownership with a mortgage and three children depending on me. So, I turned down the idea.

A year later, the development company faced legal troubles and shut down. I found another accounting job, but for three long years, I endured racism and constant challenges. Eventually, I reached a breaking point and decided to take a leap of faith. In 2012, I stepped out on my own and started my business — and I’ve been self-employed ever since.

Becoming an entrepreneur demanded faith and perseverance. Despite my background in accounting, I lacked financial literacy when it came to running a business. I had to learn through trial and error — reading, researching, and building my knowledge from the ground up.

I wanted more from life than what my circumstances had offered me, so I took control. I committed to believing in myself, becoming financially literate, and relentlessly pursuing my dreams. Today, I’m proud to own three thriving businesses that generate seven figures annually. I went from doubting my abilities to realizing I was capable of far more than I ever imagined. My past didn’t define me — it fueled me.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that where you start does not determine where you’ll finish. Life will challenge you, but every obstacle is an opportunity to rise higher.

Believe in yourself — that’s the foundation of success. Embrace failure as part of the journey. Educate yourself, surround yourself with positivity, and never let fear hold you back. Your future is unwritten, and the pen is in your hands. You don’t need all the answers or the perfect moment — you just need the courage to begin, the resilience to keep going, and the willingness to grow.

My journey wasn’t defined by instant success — it was built on progress. Every small step brought me closer to my goals. Every failure taught a lesson that became part of the foundation for the success I stand on today.

Today, I am a visionary entrepreneur, real estate investor, accountant, Master Certified Life and Financial Literacy Coach, consultant, author, and above all, a change maker committed to making a lasting impact. My mission is to empower others to believe in their potential, take control of their financial futures, and create lives filled with purpose, confidence, and freedom.

Beyond my business acumen, I am also a Master Certified Life & Financial Literacy Coach, motivational speaker, and advocate for women’s empowerment. I am dedicated to helping entrepreneurs realize their potential, master their finances, and lead with confidence.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
