Meet Shan Kene of Ma Sal’s Famous Pickles in East Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shan Kene.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I decided that I wanted to live a healthy life and keep as many unhealthy chemicals as I could out of me and my children’s diet. Cucumbers are a favorite of mines and I started to like pickles. I noticed every time I went to the market and read the ingredients of the pickles. There were just so many unnecessary ingredients. I then decided to make my own. I let my family members taste my pickles and when I saw that they Devoured the entire jar, I said I’m going to sale these.

My great-grandmother had died in a fire trying to save family members and I was always told that I reminded the family of her so I named my pickles after her. I started making Cajun and then I added lemon pepper. The business was great and being a mother of four I’m constantly cooking and lots of time I record my dishes. People started to comment on how my food looks good so I added Ma sals All that seasoning and Seafood seasoning to the brand and been doing great every since.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When COVID hit my older businesses went down so the money that I was using to fund Ma Sals had stopped all at once. It was a very difficult time because I got a lot of customers from doing pop up shops and going out personally to advertise. The business has picked up a little and I’m projecting that the holiday time will be a successful time.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Ma Sal’s Famous Pickles story. Tell us more about the business.
Ma Sal’s Famous Pickles was founded in late 2019. Our pickles, which come in Lemon pepper and Cajun are homemade with no preservatives, non gmo, and no added chemicals. Our “All that seasoning “ and our “Seafood” seasoning are both salt-free, non gmo, and are made with all-natural ingredients. To have products that are healthy and natural for my customers is very important to me and I think that in the world we live in now eating healthy is important to a lot of people. It makes me proud that my grandparents can use my products and their sugar or blood pressure won’t rise sky-high.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
COVID wasn’t such a bad thing as far as setting my life and business goals because it made things slow down. I’ve been able to actually sit and think about my brand, how I want to advertise, what packages worked best for shipping etc.
