Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanaya Robinson.
Shanaya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my first business at the age of 11 back when quarantine first began in March of 2020. I started selling glitter tumblers and in those months my first-ever business took off, eventually in those upcoming months I had made enough money to buy myself a MacBook. Now I didn’t have any intentions on becoming a graphic designer when making my first big purchase this was just something to assist me with my first business. In those upcoming months, me and my grandmother moved from Iowa to back to our home state of Illinois this is where I began my obsession of designing on my computer it was a talent I kept to myself that I didn’t like to share mainly because I was starting to enjoy being a designer instead of the business that I started in 5th grade. I was afraid many wouldn’t support me ending my business to work on my computer so I began doing something I started to dread rather than doing something I loved. I started asking other designers on Instagram for assistance in June of 2021 that’s where I started to invest in what was originally called SR Designs By Shanaya.
In the beginning, I began doing this as like a side job and never really thought of it as something that could’ve token off. During the summer months, I worked and practiced on selling pre-made designs until I stumbled upon many other designers taking custom bookings which prompted me to switch my business niche over to custom-made designs instead of generic pre-mades. Now we are here, August of 2021 I got my first real client. I was ecstatic because this is something I truly want to pursue. Now I am in the 7th grade running 2 businesses all while going to school, at this time life is hectic and I never have a day off to myself but I love my newfound hobby. I begin to generate more clientele which is when I changed our name to Shanaya Graphics the name change for me was just a new start. As I progressed my clientele grew I didn’t have a passion for it anymore in the business I started in 5th grade, the new year of 2022 came and eventually that business shut down and I put all of my effort in Shanaya Graphics. Over the last year, my business has grown tremendously and I am grateful for everything my clients and business has done for me!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In terms of a “rough road” would be droughts in clients. Sometimes business is booming other times business is very slow but those are just the curves of running a business especially a service-based business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Graphic Designer/Creative Director and I run Shanaya Graphics. I specialize in creative directing for businesses in the cosmetic and beauty industry. We now have the pleasure of working with aspiring business owners and entrepreneurs from all over the world. I specialize in curating content and managing websites, meaning I create content specialized for their particular following and manage keeping their websites up to date with new web platform updates, rebrands and holiday updates. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come, this was just a hobby for me now its expanded and became a large part of my daily life and future. I feel like I have my own scope of versatility and creativity skills which sets me apart from others. I also pay lots of attention to detail because I build a healthy relationship with all my clients and get to know what they do and why they do it which helps me in many ways.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My good friend Alex she’s truly my biggest motivator. She helps me understand things in many ways that I didn’t before, she’s truly like the big sister I never had maybe it’s because we’re both in the same field of work but I don’t know where I would be without her support. She plays many roles in my life and I’m grateful for all of them.
