Today we’d like to introduce you to Sha’Rae Hicks.
Sha’Rae, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Today, I am studying to be a Lactation Counselor. I got to this point from seeing there is a lack in education about breastfeeding in underserved areas. Black American women have the least percentile of women who nurse and continue to nurse beyond three months. I, too, have struggled with breastfeeding. And that’s how I birthed Milking Miracles.
I needed something more to help my supply that did not hurt my baby’s belly and tasted yummy. I tried the teas and some of the other foods that are known to boost your supply but none of them were delicious. So I made my own lactation cookies. They taste amazing and they boosted my supply, win-win! After a year of making them for myself, I decided to donate cookies to the Ronald McDonald House for the moms, who, through it all, still decided to pump for their baby. Then I said, why not offer them to other Moms in my area.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have been times when I have multiple orders and I’m dog tired from taking care of my family and still working my full time, so staying up until 3 am to get cookies baked were horrible. I was the only one doing the baking. I was using a hand mixer. However, a friend blessed me with a mixing stand and sometimes she’d come over to help. Through it all, I love the quiet time to bake lactation cookies and pray that the cookies would help other moms, just as it did me.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Milking Miracles – what should we know?
My company’s specialty at this time is lactation cookies for mom’s who need a boost in milk production. I’m most proud of how many moms love the taste and continue to spread the word on how my cookies have increased their supply. I think what sets me apart is that I’m a young black mommy with a heart for other moms. So many times us moms get put on the back burner and forgotten about at the most critical times. I’m working to show it’s more than cookies, it’s about the education of breastfeeding and the care for moms after one of the most traumatic times we will ever face.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First, I have to give credit to the overseer. My children are the main reason for my journey. My husband who would care for the baby in the middle of the night, sometimes even bust some suds (baking creates a lot of dishes). My friends who took the time out to encourage me and support me with purchases for themselves or as gifts to other breastfeeding moms.
