Meet Shashi Charles of Savory Spin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shashi Charles.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shashi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
If you need tips on losing things, I am the one you want to turn to! About 5 years ago, I was at the height of my losing-all-the-things game… with my specialty being losing the post its I was writing recipes down on.

Well, my daughter was frustrated at not being able to eat the same recipe twice as if I lost the post-it I wrote the recipe down on, I never managed to replicate it exactly. So, she suggested I start a blog. And, seeing she was the center of my universe at that time, I obliged.

In the beginning, I didn’t put much thought into my blog – after all, it was just for me and my daughter… a part-time pastime.

I originally named this blog of mine “Runnin Srilankan” as I was born in Sri Lanka and ran a lot (genius-blog-namer at work, eh?) And… I began to document dishes on here that she (my daughter) loved with my ramblings and EXTREMELY bad pictures! But – as time passed, I actually began to truly enjoy blogging and the food blogging community.

As time went by, this blog of mine that started as a hobby and then turned into a part-time income, eventually started bringing in a full-time pay around the time I was laid off from my long-time gig as a full-time graphic designer.

Over the years, I have grown to love this journey of learning… about photography… about monetization… about SEO… about working with brands… about social media’s role in it all… a journey that keeps on evolving and humbling me every day in the scope of knowledge that it entails.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the beginning, it was a struggle to keep blogging while I worked a full-time gig… and, as a food-blogger, a large part of my job is solitary… which can be a struggle at times so I jump at the opportunity to attend conferences, trade shows and workshops!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Savory Spin story. Tell us more about the business.
My blog, Savory Spin, is a food blog where you will find a variety of easy-to-make, better-for-you, tried-and-declared-tasty, recipes that have been mostly inspired by my childhood in Sri Lanka and The UAE.

I try to make sure that most of my “exotic” recipes incorporate budget-friendly ingredients that can be purchased at any local grocery store. You won’t find hard to find ingredients in my recipes that are a fusion of Sri Lankan/Indian cuisine that’s adapted to fit the American palate. I am a huge proponent of “a little spice is always nice” and I passionately incorporate some sort of spice, from cardamom to coriander, into eats and treats that will tickle your taste buds and not mess with your waistline (mostly).

I have worked with several Fortune 500 brands and have had my recipes featured in Huffington Post, Buzzfeed, Sofab Food, Food Fanatical, Best Self Atlanta and Honest Cooking, but what has made me the proudest is how my daughter can whip up so many of my delicious meals all by herself, also being a runner-up in the Wild Blueberry Council’s contest https://www.wildblueberries.com/blog/contest-winning-smoothie-recipe/.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am not a huge believer in luck… however, I am a huge believer in God and am truly honored and so humbled that He has guided and led someone like me to where I am.. ever faithfully providing protection and provision along the way.
