Meet Sheena Brown of Spa Bliss By Sheena in Covington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheena Brown.

Sheena, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for all-natural skincare products initially started when I began working in the spa at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in 2008. I very quickly learned the true importance of a great skincare regimen but I also quickly realized that so many of the products contained harsh ingredients that did not work well for my sensitive skin. That’s when I decided to start experimenting at home. I’d test out all sorts of products for both the face and body using simple ingredients I found at health & wellness stores and even my local grocery store. People often complimented me on my skin, but I never thought anyone would actually be interested in buying products from me. That all changed when I hosted a baby shower for a friend and gave everyone handmade body scrubs as thank you gifts. They were a huge hit with everyone and so many people wanted to know if and how they could purchase it from me. I then decided to start Spa Bliss with one goal in mind… providing affordable handmade skincare products using all-natural ingredients. Spa Bliss By Sheena was officially founded in 2015 only offering body butters and sugar scrubs. Over the years I’ve expanded the line to include massage candles, lip balm, soap, shower steamers, facial cleansers, facial masks, facial moisturizers, hair serum and a moisturizer for hair. My goal is to offer a full line of products for the face, hair, and body.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This has been one of the most challenging but rewarding things I’ve ever dealt with in my entire life. Over the years, I’ve learned that being an entrepreneur is no easy task. I’ve had my fair share of failures but the success I’ve had has made all of the hard times worth it. In the beginning, I struggled with where I could purchase quality ingredients and supplies. I’d spend hours driving to stores like Trader Joe’s, The Dekalb Farmer’s Market, Whole Foods and Sevenanda. As my business grew, I quickly realized that I needed to buy on a larger scale and from a reputable company that would be able to get my products to me in a timely manner. This was no easy task either because I had to spend money to make money so there were times where I know I was spending way more than I made. I’ve also had to learn how to balance becoming both a wife and mother while going to college full time, working a full-time job and still running this business.

Please tell us more about your story. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from others? What are you most proud of as a company?
I specialize in all-natural, handmade, skincare, hair and body products. I also offer home goods such as candles and wax tarts. My company is most well known for the whipped body butter. I’ve had customers tell me that it is literally the best shea butter they’ve ever purchased. What sets me apart from other companies is that all of my products are handmade to order. Everything is fresh, neatly packaged and has a shelf life of 1 year or more. Another very popular seller is my Liquid Gold Hair & Scalp Serum. It was designed with natural hair in mind but I’ve found that it works well on all hair types of different ethnicities. I am most proud of my tenacity. I’ve taken losses over the years but through it all, I never gave up hope for my business.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, the only thing that I think I’d do differently is to be better prepared financially. I’d have more money saved and a better financial plan overall to get my business to where it needs to be.
