Meet Shemea Washington of Batter Up Bakery in Smyrna

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shemea Washington.

Shemea, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Batter Up Bakery, LLC is an in-home bakery and eatery, established by Shemea Washington (graduate of Clark Atlanta University), in April 2011. A mother in need of a Polo cake for my son’s birthday, I decided to batter up and bake! Initially, I began baking full-time; however, currently I’m operating part-time.

Has it been a smooth road?
There are pros and cons with operating a bakery alone. I must say that it is a little difficult to market my business, as well as, bake and create without the help of anyone. As a result, there are moments when I do not have as many customers as I should. I love what I do; therefore, I have to purchase the correct marketing tools, in order to assure that my business prospers. The pros are pretty obvious (lol). The pay is great, but most importantly, the smile on my customers’ faces when they see and taste my creations…priceless moments.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Batter Up Bakery – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Batter Up Bakery, LLC, specializes in customized creations, in addition to your traditional desserts with a twist. I bake a variety of treats that are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. I offer dessert tables for any occasion, chocolate covered strawberries, cupcakes, decorative cakes, traditional cakes, pies, banana pudding, cheesecakes, gourmet cookies, lactation cookies, and more. One accomplishment that I am most proud of: I had the opportunity to bake for someone famous. He was one of many more to come. I am speaking it into existence. God has really blessed me with a gift. I’d be imprudent to ignore my calling. Let me take a swing at your taste buds…Batter Up!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like the best and least about our city is that it is big and busy (lol). I know, it sounds weird. There’s just so much ground to cover here, and it is just kind of difficult to target the correct crowd when there are so many people residing here. Over population could definitely be a positive for a business; however, there are a plethora of other bakeries here. I just want to separate my bakery from everyone else’s.

Pricing:

  • Price varies according to cake design and the amount you’d like for it to serve. Decorative cakes, with fondant design start from $3.50 per serving; without, starts at 2.50 per serving.
  • Chocolate covered strawberries range from $25-$45 per dozen, based on one’s decision to have them infused or not.
  • Cupcakes are $30+ per dozen.
  • Gourmet and Lactation Cookies are $20 per dozen.
