Today we’d like to introduce you to Shemera Sinkfield.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The love for a camera began when we were in our primary years. Our “first” camera was our mom’s instant Polaroid, there was no film in it, but we would always pretend that we were taking pictures until our mom got us a Nickelodeon camera. Being creative was one of those things that kind of came natural to us. In about 4th/5th grade, I remember us creating a working projector from scratch with a cardboard box and other items around the house or that we collected from our teachers when they cleaned their classrooms.
That love that started with just a camera grew when we got to high school and applied for an apprenticeship program that had a Video Production Program. From there, we went on to get a bachelor’s degree in Media Production for Film and Video at American InterContinental University. Which brings us to today!
Sometimes you may think and question and wonder hey…is this for me? Is this my God-given talent? But then you are randomly given a sign or hint that reminds you why you started and to keep pushing. Remembering why you started in the first place is what keeps you through those times of questioning when going into business. Don’t be ashamed to take a break. They are needed from time to time. Time to step away from busy schedules, help put us in a space that we are free and brings inspiration. Applying the pressures of the world and other people and comparing yourself to others can mentally destroy you.
DO YOU AND BE GREAT! USE WHAT YOU HAVE! AND REMEMBER THAT YOUR PASSION WILL MAKE ROOM FOR YOU.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey definitely has not been an easy one. Nothing in business comes easy. Nothing worth something comes easy. You have to work for it. But I can’t complain about it either, because, in the mix of it all, there are lessons that were learned and motivated growth. Some struggles that came along the way varied between self-questioning (questioning if this is going to go anywhere, if people will respect our art, comparing our work to others) Then you have those times where people may try to take advantage of you or even low-ball you. But from those situations, you grow.
Rebranding has been an obstacle (and YES a name change is on the way.) In deciding on what direction we want to go with our marketing, while also remaining creative and not going overboard, it has been tough to create something that stands out for us and perfectly describes who we are.
In addition to rebranding and other things that come along throughout the business journeys, dealing with Yashemera moving to another state has been the most difficult. We are mirror twins that literally means what it says. We are a mirror to one another. I am left handed and she is right-handed (Imagine that in school.) She uses the left side of her brain, which makes her the more logical thinker (i.e., good at handling paperwork, contracts, etc…). That works perfectly because I’m the creative one, I stick behind the camera and edit. Now, I have to learn how to shake and jive my way through on both ends. Which lead me to start my own travel business (shameful plug, lol we can definitely talk about travel *hint hint* just hit me up.)
This is also the perfect time because we can disconnect from any old ties and start fresh, you can return with a new mindset, fresh ideas, and new work.
