Meet Sherie and Sherita Murphy of The BlackBettys in Metro-Atlanta Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherie and Sherita Murphy.

Sherie and Sherita, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We were born & raised in Atlanta, GA. And for as long as we can remember we wanted to sing & entertain. We come from a musical family. As young girls, we watch our mom along with our aunts’ sing.  So it was natural for us. We got our start in church & in the school chorus. We were blessed to have had excellent music teachers that pushed us. Fueled by our love of music & the desire to make our family proud, we hit the ground running & never looked back.  We kept going. We joined several singing groups & bands over the years.  While there we got to sing & perform on stages all around the country in front of millions of and stages internationally singing for Presidents, Prime Ministers, UN Ambassadors, and other foreign dignitaries. After years of singing in groups, we decided to focus on OUR BRAND, so we formed “The Black Bettys” back in the early 2000s.  As The Black Bettys, we’ve worked in the studio and/or on stage with national recording hip hop artists Ludacris, Outkast & the Dungeon Family, as well as Grammy Award Winning Artist/Songwriter/Producer T-Pain, Keith Sweat, Glenn Jones, Regina Belle, Chante’ Moore, RL of the group Next, Monica, Q Parker of 112, Karyn White, Keith Washington, Gerald Levert, Algebra Blessett, Christian Bush of Sugarland, Bobby Brown, BlackBerry Smoke, Cameo’s Anthony Lockett and a host of others.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, the road has not been easy.  Real Life happened. We’ve experienced love & loss. We both became mothers. Balancing home life & our careers as single mothers can get really challenging at times. S/O to our village that makes it all possible for us to do what we love to do. We’ve also lost some loved ones very close to us.  We lost our mom Sherry Murphy to Breast cancer. We also lost our Grandmother Shirley Murphy & our 1st cousin Nicole Murphy (who was more like our baby sister) all in a short period of time. They were some of our biggest supporters & champions.  Our passion for singing/ performing & our family motivates us to keep going.

Please tell us about The BlackBettys.
Let’s start with our name…The name  Black Bettys represents so much more than people think.  The color “Black” is classy, mysterious, edgy & sexy. It’s elegant, powerful and makes a statement.  A Betty epitomizes a modern-day queen.  She’s educated, deep, witty, strong, brave, honest, loyal, nurturing, young hearted, soulful, spiritual, connected, driven, & beautiful. She’s the whole package.   So when you put it all together….We are The Black Bettys! We are professionally known for being (identical twins) background/supporting vocalists. We are now Independent Artists.  Our first single was released in 2017.  We’re dropping new music all 2019.  Our music is available for purchase/ download on all digital outlets. And you can always catch us on stage.  For our schedule, please visit our website at www.theblackbettys.com

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
There are so many but we will try to narrow it down…. Making up jingles & singing in the car with our mom is one of our favorite memories. Performing at school talent shows, singing at church & at family reunions are some other  fond memories of ours.

I LOVE these ladies! They have worked so hard to get to where they are today. I have witnessed them persevere through heartache, loss and health challenges.

In addition to being great singers/performers, they’re multifaceted business women. They understand the business of music and are also engaged in entrepreneurial ventures to add to their existing Dreme Luxury Hair business.

Although The BlackBettys are very busy with their projects, they regularly invest time giving back to the community by participating in career day at local schools to inspire young people to never give up on pursuing their dreams and encouraging them to follow their passion. They visit senior citizen homes to minister to the elderly. When called upon to minister during Sunday morning worship service, they do so in the most genuine spirit of worship.

I’m so proud of them and for them. Much love to The BlackBettys!!
