Meet Shirley Su

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shirley Su.

Shirley Su

Hi Shirley, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It has been a long road, indeed. I started as a freelance comic creator not too long after completing my undergraduate degree, which later on led to me becoming a freelance illustrator, designer and even one time, a full-time in-house designer. Two years before the COVID pandemic, I started my M.F.A. Illustration program and completed it in 2022.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Right after I completed my graduate program, I immediately jumped into the busy life with back-to-back freelance illustration and design projects. Aside from those, I also have been invited to display and sell my printed goods (posters and greeting cards) by the kind owner of MochiNut at Sugarloaf. My web shop has also become a destination for side income. Pet and human portrait commissions have also preoccupied my time. With these activities, I have kept myself busy. However, just like any new business endeavors in any field, I have encountered obstacles.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My most recent proudest moment is when I gathered enough courage to start my own business. Never in my life have I ever thought to sell my illustrations and designs on various products. In the past, I have been told to start my own business of this nature but I never had the interest for it. In this particular line of products, dogs, cats, and other animals have been my theme so far. Who knows, they may expand someday.

I work in both vector and non-vector style utilizing colors and at times, texture. My work feature people, animals and beyond. They also range from minimalistic to soothing colorful light-hearted illustrations. I believe versatility is my strength in fulfilling the vision of each of my client’s projects. When was the last time you came across a problem solver who loves all things oatmeal and all hot/warm drinks? If that does not set me apart from others, then I do not know what could. Let us work together!

What’s next?
I am excited to see where my current creative adventure will lead me.

It is everyone’s hope that one day their work will be discovered by someone, which will lead to a significant change in my creative journey.
