Today we’d like to introduce you to Polly.
Polly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Shiyenne, I am 20 (although, I’ll probably be 21 by the time this article is published.) and I am an entrepreneur. I was born and raised in Atlanta and specifically reside in Douglasville. In recent years, I have committed my life to skincare and enhancing natural beauty. My story may not be a cookie cutter, yet is honest, which is why I feel as though it is important to share. In the fall of 2017, I began my first semester of college and I was ultimately miserable and soon fell into depression, due to lack of motivation and passion. One day, while sitting in the kitchen, I was searching for a way out and ultimately, the resources I needed to find my true passion appeared. I whipped my first batch of shea butter and soon dropped out of school to pursue my new business adventure. From nursing school drop out, to shea butter master, in the fall of 2017, I founded POLLYMETICS, an all-natural skincare line targeted at people of color, as I feel they deserve both organic and affordable products targeted to aid in skin issues that people of color are known for having, such as hyperpigmentation. From there, I grew hunger for the science of skin and this prompted me to begin facials, which later turned me to esthetics school. I currently run and operate POLLYMETICS LLC and Polly’s Perfections Mobile Esthetics service.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to get to where I am has been far from smooth but has absolutely been both rewarding and worthwhile. Following your dreams is a scary journey because it is filled with uncertainty and doubt. However, this doubt and uncertainty were rooted around others around me who didn’t trust my vision and wished the security of college on me. Being your own biggest fan, when all you need is to feel supported was by far the biggest obstacle thus far, yet I vowed to believe in myself and my dreams despite the naysayers and the negative energy around. I actually learned from this that those who doubt you are more often intimidated by your initiative to take a chance and thus I vowed to never stop leaping.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I created my first business in the fall of 2017, POLLYMETICS was originally created with four essential products an was built on a “build your own” bar style, where customers chose which essential oils and scents that they would like in their choice of butter, body glazes, scrubs and soaps. From there, I began to grow interested in toners and even feature an eyebrow and eyelash serum, from four products, POLLYMETICS has grown to host 13 products all year as well as an array of seasonal items that are targeted for skincare needs according to the weather. POLLYMETICS began after being miserable and stuck in a college major that I hated. One day, I was fed up with being depressed and after my Britany Spears meltdown, I had finally had enough of feeling unfulfilled and thus went on to search for something that made me feel alive.
As a little girl, I was raised around all-natural products, specifically for the hair and this prompted my initial interest in skincare. I remember being as young as five and six, mixing honey and oatmeal to sit on my face. The first product I was introduced to was “hair crack” which was a shea butter-based hair cream. In my search for better, I used the shea butter to create a body butter and the first POLLYMETICS product was born. From there, I grew an interest in the science of skin and this prompted an interest in esthetics and I joined a program as a student in January of 2019 and this initiative soon grew to become Polly’s Perfections, a mobile enhancement service. My specialties are of facials and skincare products and I also am a strong believer in holistic healing. I am truly proud of the growth of my business because my goal is to one day have “Spas in the Hood” targeted to give people of color a sanctuary in their own communities. I am a strong believer in embracing what makes brown boys and girls special and my mission is to introduce natural healing to our community.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is fulfilling my dreams and living in the purpose that God created me to be. I believe that money doesn’t equate to success if there is no passion or drive behind it.
