Today we’d like to introduce you to Simone Edmonson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Over the years, I have started some successful and unsuccessful retailing business while working for corporate America and battling back to back rounds of breast cancer. I have learned that the most successful and sustainable business has to be grounded in passion and purpose while aligning to my principles.
I decided to start my business without debt; hence, I saved $500 per paycheck over the last several years. It’s wasn’t easy saving that amount of money as I had lots of financial commitments but I used my vision of seeing little children of color having self-love while wearing my company’s jammies. At the moment, each sale that I make is reinvested back into the business so that I can continue to rapidly expand my product offerings. Most importantly, I have a mission of being customer-obsessed thus I won’t compromise on quality and swiftly adapting to the demands of my customer. Focusing on quality and repeat business through customer satisfaction. We are also working very hard to expand the business e.g. Pre-teen, gowns, slippers, etc. Our Boys line is coming soon and we will also be adding larger sizes to our collections.
Three weeks ago, I was informed that my corporate job of 20 years is being eliminated in a few months. Regardless of the news, I’m in a good place. My 9-5 job funded my dream for two years and I’m thankful for it. Now, I can focus on Dreams and Jammies full time.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We officially launched in August. We are so new at this. I’m learning daily. I know that I can’t do this alone. My family has been 100% supportive of the business. My husband handles logistics, my niece is marketing and I am the creative director. It’s all about teamwork.
Please tell us about Dreams and Jammies.
Dreams and Jammies was created for our beautiful girls of color who often go unrepresented and unseen. I believe that little girls seeing themselves represented is incredibly important.
Over the years, I could not find pajamas that contained images of black girls. I decided to change that and create a collection of pajamas that celebrates our individuality. My designs capture the sweetness and love of our beautiful black princesses.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would not change anything because without my mistakes, losses, trials, errors. I would not be where I am now. I am who I am because of what I’ve been through. One of my daily affirmations is, “My mind has the POWER to create what it sees”. And I believe that with all of my heart. This is not easy to start a business. Just take action and do something everyday for your business even if it’s 5 minutes a day.
