Today we’d like to introduce you to Skye Smith.
Skye, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been in the media industry since the late 90’s. I started off as an intern at a couple of radio stations here in Atlanta. I have worked in literally every department at a radio station except I.T. I am currently heard Saturday late night going into Sunday mornings on Star 94.1 from 12mid-5am, Not only am I on-air talent, I voice commercials on our sister station WVEE as well. Ok, so the radio industry is one sector of the entertainment realm, I am also an actress. I have been acting since high school… many many years ago. I really love the stage, within the last six years I have been in several stage productions. The majority of those were LJEG – Learical Jonez Entertainment Group productions. I have been able to portray a variety of characters. That’s what I love about acting, the ability to jump into someone else’s skin and experience and feel what they would feel. I have been in a couple of film of productions as well. Those are fun, sometimes it’s alot of hurry up and wait and do overs!
With stageplays, there aren’t any do overs. You are LIVE!! You better improv and make it work if you or your castmates forget a line! Not only do I act and am a radio personality, I am also a personality on a Web-based lifestyle show, N-Style Atlanta. I have been reporting and interviewing from red carpets and intimate studio settings for about 15 years or so! Wow! Didn’t realize it’s been that long. I love sitting down with celebrities and learning about why they do what they do. I’ve interviewed everyone from Russell Simmons to Xernona Clayton to Anthony Anderson and Evander Holyfield. Gosh and so many more! My favorite was Janelle Monáe.. we knew her BEFORE she was the Janelle Monáe that the public knows and loves. I just really love getting to really know people and making a difference in someone’s life.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ha Ha Ha… is there such a thing as a smooth road? If so, please show me where that is. LOL. On my life road map, I had lots of struggles… I was a single mother making very very little money in an industry that I loved. I was married and divorced…There were times my baby girl and I didn’t have food in the house. There was a time we didn’t have a place to live, thank God for friends. I have some pretty darn amazing friends… God always had my back so we made it through every obstacle.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
In this industry, it’s easy to get swept in the waves and become someone you’re not. You know, compromise who you are and not staying true to your essence. I think I’ve done a pretty amazing job at that. I am always willing to help someone along way.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the future, I plan to continue evolving in my craft. Especially in acting, I love taking classes, I love to learn, I love learning with others who have the same passion. When it comes to radio, it’s the same, I want to be a better me than I was the last my listeners tuned in. With regards to my show hosting role with N’Style Atlanta, the show is continually evolving and we are even releasing a reality show that follows the road of us journalists.
