Today we’d like to introduce you to Sloan Duckie.
Hi Sloan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Sloan but mostly known as TimStulla, Jamaican-born and raised. My journey as a child moving from Jamaica to Florida and then relocating to GA is a long story but has taught me many great lessons, but I always knew that “this young immigrant will make something of this NUE life opportunity.”
I have literally gone through what they may call the bottom to the top, ” The American Dream.” Moving to Georgia brought a lot to me when it came to the entertainment industry. I was modeling for the top Jamaican brand in the world, RepJa, making camo appearances in various shows on different networks like Disney, CW, and Fox. I got a taste of the entertainment industry and fell in love. I never really followed the dream my parents had expected of me, but I made sure I kept my grades up, graduated college with a repeatable degree, and didn’t backtalk during the process. Of course, I also started getting into the night scene of Atlanta during my high school years. Attending launch events, music industry meetups, and various Caribbean parties and I knew this was something I was interested in but didn’t really know my place. Partnering with a few of my close friends, we formed NUE Atlanta in 2014. From the launch of NUE, we have thrown some of the top Carribean events in GA. From our LikeGlue Fest, Silence in the City, and our viral Friday event LikeGlue Fridays. I love to bring the Caribbean experience to people; it makes me feel like I’m back home in Jamaica. But of course, I couldn’t let that be the only thing I had on my hands. I needed to make sure I chased all my dreams because that is what the actual ” American Dream” was for me, being able to do anything I could without the restrictions of poverty mentality or space.
I have been able to dive into my love for music and discovered an amazing talent, which I have become Road Manager for one of the top up-and-coming Jamaican artists, Armanii(@armaniimusiq). I also do a lot of brand development and curating as well for a few local brands based here in Atlanta.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think anything in my life has ever been on a smooth road. One of the most difficult challenges in my journey was when I first came to America and saw that my mother was alone here, working to support her children back home in Jamaica. I didn’t want to leave her side. That moment made me grow up a little faster than normal, and I knew that I had to do what was best to make sure being here would ease some pain for my mother by being close to her but also make sure I was never a burden on her. My struggles were mainly battles I fought within because I never really had an outlet who actually saw my dreams or wasn’t even able to think of anything I may try to approach them with without trying to shut down. So growing up, I was mainly inside the house stay out of the way most of the time.
As I get older, I learn that struggles/stress/pain is all a phase of growth and always a lesson in disguise, so always pay attention to life.
