Today we’d like to introduce you to Smitha Bhandari.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Elana Zimand and I met about seven years ago while we were both working for a larger practice. We often collaborated on patients, where she would do the therapy and I would manage the medications. Over time, we found that we were very similar both in our clinical practices and in our personalities.
Starting our own practice has definitely had its share of challenges. In our nearly 3 years, we have worked through major building and office renovations. We’ve learned so much about what it takes to own and operate a successful business. When we started, we had a lot of uncertainty about how busy we would be. We started conservatively, even bringing supplies from our own homes. We’ve definitely had our share of frustrating situations but have had a lot of laughs along the way as well. The hardest laughs may have come when a pigeon flew into Elana’s office in the middle of a therapy session!
We’ve really tried to build a community. Though there are five clinicians and two staff members who work in our office, we try to meet regularly with each other and other providers we collaborate with. As we have established ourselves and been able to help others build their practice, we have grown beyond our expectations.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
A building undergoing a massive renovation, a move within our building as our office suite was being renovated, learning how to balance responsibilities, learning how to balance taking care of patients with the administrative duties of owning a business, maintaining our practices while having the vision to help others grow their practice.
Please tell us about Path Group of Atlanta.
We are the Path Group of Atlanta, a psychiatry and therapy group. We provide medical and psychological care to children, adolescents, and adults. We are most proud of our reputation within the community. We work hard as individuals and as a practice to maintain outstanding relationships with therapists and doctors in the community in an effort provide collaborative care for all of our patients and families.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I’m not sure I would. I think all of the moments, the good and the bad, have led us to where we are. We have had a lot of great learning experiences. I am so proud of our hard work and dedication to building the Path Group of Atlanta.
