Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Jones.
Robin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved hair and makeup. I’ve always had a passion for making people look beautiful. But instead of pursuing my passion I decided to get a degree in finance that I’ve never even used. I worked in retail as a manager for a few years and one weekend I decided to go to a hair show in Orlando. That Monday that I returned I put my two-week notice into my job and never looked back. I enrolled in Tony and guy academy in Marietta And haven’t golfed myself and my passion ever since. Some of my proudest moments have been winning best student makeup at the Toni and guy photographic awards 2015, being published in Clark Atlanta University’s fashion look book 2015, and working on hair and make up for Elbert Ivory models.
I am now accepting hair and makeup clients at Jade Salon in Smyrna and my next venture is microblading which will be available mid-November 2016.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been tough but well worth it. The hardest part was definitely having the courage to quit my job and become a full-time student work and still be able to survive financially. There were many weeks of not having gas money but my family and friends were definitely supportive and it helps to have a support system. Also, there were moments in school where I doubted myself but I think every student goes through that. Every student has that haircut or hair color that they just don’t understand and they can’t seem to get right. And that’s OK the important thing is to just keep going.
Is there some part of you work that is particularly difficult?
The hardest part about the cosmetology industry would be standing out in a highly saturated market. Even on social media, there are millions of hair stylists, makeup artists, etc. and in this industry, it’s all about finding your niche and your market which can sometimes be tricky.
How do you define success?
Success is reaching self-fulfillment. I want to feel fulfilled in life not only in my career but in my personal life. I don’t have to be rich but comfortable meaning if I decide to go to LA for a week to just have some fun I can do so without stressing or having to budget for it. I want to be a traveling stylist that’s also earning residual income through real estate. In my personal life marriage and kids are goals of course but as of now my career is my focus.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to growing my microblading business as well as my clientele at Jade Salon. I’m planning on purchasing a condo in 2018 and going out of the country for my birthday next year!
