Today we’d like to introduce you to William Polk.
William, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I always knew I wanted to do something artistic with my life. I took art classes throughout high school and continued my studies in college. I graduated with a BFA in graphic design from SCAD and now have almost 24 yrs. experience. I also realize how important growth is, so I have expanded my skillset to include sound design and video editing.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have had a couple of bumps but nothing too major. The tough thing for me is to keep learning and growing as an artist even when the environment I am in says otherwise.
What were you like growing up?
From what I can remember, I was very shy growing up. Interest wise, I was always into doing something creative. I remember drawing my own comic book characters. Art was always something that I was interested in. My art classes in high school were very important in helping me decide which direction to take. I continued studying art in college and learned about graphic design. It seemed like a promising field and I have enjoyed a very long, successful career as a graphic designer.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I was always a big Batman fan growing up. I had a Batman t-shirt and my mother would use a towel as my “cape”. And I called my father’s Lincoln a batmobile.
What are your plans for the future?
I am currently in the midst of planning a career change. As much as I love graphic design, at certain points in my career, I have longed to do something new. I think it is so important to try and learn new things. This is how we grow as both artists and as human beings. I love movies and have done some post-grad studies in sound design. I also love motion graphics and video editing. Using my creative abilities keeps me happy and ties in perfectly with my life mantra: Create. Learn. Grow.
