Today we’d like to introduce you to Somalia Lee.
Somalia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I remember being very creative as a child. I loved drawings, fashion, music, writing, sewing, acting, sports and many other things. It was always something special about me. In my teenage years, my creative side never left. I was 16 I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life or how could I express myself so I asked my dad for a camera I didn’t know anything about cameras but he still got it. What motivated me to get serious was how much support and love I was getting from everybody. Especially my friends, family and followers on Instagram, they were my biggest supporters. Later on, my name got out there in the industry and I started making a little money. I was shooting with everybody and meeting some of everybody. Whenever an opportunity presented itself self, I always said YES! Even with no experience. That’s when I found my love for photography and directing.
At 18 I graduated from high school on my birthday, so It was what’s next. Me turning 18 the same day I graduated was a big deal for me. I knew I had to stick with photography because I started something and I never wanted to work for nobody. I went out on faith, I filed my LLC and got my studio in Atlanta at The Goat Farm. Since then, I have learned so much, and it’s only been a year.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some challenges I had were getting doors closed in my face, which motivates me to go harder and people trying to take advantage of my work.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Currently, I’m 19, I have produced work for so many people. My work is known for my raw style of photography while I’m also growing my brand as a stylist and creative director. I launched another new business along with my big brother. I am the owner of the House of Smoke smoke and vape shop in East Point, Ga. As an owner, I manage the shop’s overall design, marketing campaigns, social media strategy, merchandise and brand partnerships, shaping the overall influence and direction. While still in school majoring in entertainment law, working as a photographer, stylist and creative director. I’m just a little girl from Atlanta that just wants to create and inspire. I’m proud to say that!
What were you like growing up?
After I graduated, I would like to continue my education in Entertainment law. I can see myself doing PR work. I have a good eye for marketing.
