Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonja Crystal Williams.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sonja Crystal. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We founded Go Getter Marketing Group in 2008. It really was a business idea that spawned during the big recession. My partner, Chris Williams, was in real estate and considering whether or not he wanted to stay in the industry. At the time, I was doing pharmaceutical sales and enjoyed my job but decided to consult with friends who owned businesses about how they could improve their websites and brand presence. We decided to go ahead and formally create a business. By 2009, two major things happened: Chris decided to weather the real estate storm and I decided to leave my full-time job to pursue our company’s growth. Within a year, I went from consulting to offering full-service digital marketing to a range of clients around Atlanta. To build my skills, I attended every conference, webinar, and meetup I could find that focused on social media and digital marketing. I immersed myself in it and the end-result has allowed me to build a sustainable business that I enjoy. Today, we look at ourselves as a boutique marketing agency with clients across the U.S. and a virtual team of five ready to serve our clients.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wish I could say it was a smooth road, but there have definitely been learning lessons along the way. When I left my full-time job, the timing was great. Because of the recession, I actually took a “voluntary exit” from my company and was granted a six-month severance package. I stretched that six-month salary into twelve by adjusting my lifestyle and giving myself that twelve-months to at least cover my most important bills such as car note, rent, gas, and student loan payments. If I were to do it all over again, there are a few things I’d do differently. First, I left my full-time employment on a whim. I knew where I eventually wanted to go with running our marketing agency, but I didn’t exactly have a plan in place nor did I seek any type of investments. While working full-time I should have been more diligent in using my income (while still employed) to make important investments into my company website, SEO, and getting memberships with organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce that would allow me to scale my business with larger, steady clients faster. I also would have cut back on all the juggling. My first year I was balancing other personal projects that really took away from my complete focus on growing our agency. I now understand the power of focusing on just one thing and mastering it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Go Getter Marketing Group story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a boutique digital marketing agency with offices in Atlanta and we have been expanding into Los Angeles. We look at ourselves as architects of our clients’ online presence. We focus heavily on developing online marketing campaigns using a combination of blog and content writing, Facebook ads, Google ads, email campaigns and social media management. What our clients love about us is our intuitive sense and a strong understanding of each of their brands. We really take the time to get to know our clients, they value it, and it shows. They don’t have to hold our hands through every part of the process, we can learn enough from them to take their vision and run. They love this about us and it’s something they tell us truly sets us apart from others.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I like to think of myself as lucky, but luck is just a word assigned to being in the right position to receive what the universe has in store for you. In my personal and professional life, I’ve been stroked by luck on many occasions — but for me, the seeds of that luck were really planted when I first had the idea, vision, and belief that I could achieve each important moment in my life.
