Meet Southwest Atlanta Photographer: Michael K. Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael K. Jones.

Michael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always enjoyed taking pictures. As a child, I remember making pinhole cameras, using 35 mm cameras with real film, and my favorite, the Polaroid. My uncle Bubba, in Memphis, is a photographer and I remember marveling over his camera collection whenever I used to visit. I’ve always found something special about the ability to freeze time and capture moments of life in an image. After purchased my first digital camera about 10 years, I was asked by a friend to shoot her child’s birthday party. After posting the pictures on social media, I received a lot of attention which led to other people to ask me to take pictures at their events. One thing led to another and my hobby grew into a part time business.

Has it been a smooth road?
To be honest it’s been smooth. What started as a hobby has grown far more than I expected. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with and learn from other photographers who have invested their time by helping me improve my skills and knowledge of the craft. It’s special when other people respect your work and want you to be a part of their plans so they can have pictures to cherish forever.

When you look back, can you point to a period when you wanted to quit or a period that was really frustrating?
To be honest no. I work full-time in Corporate America, so photography has always served as an outlet to express my creative, artistic side. If anything, I’ve done more photography than in the past. Although I never consider giving up I have had to make changes as far as what I shoot. Recently, I’ve spent more time focusing on events and improving my in-studio techniques.

What would you tell someone who is just starting out?
I think it’s important to utilize the variety of resources available for photographers. Sources like YouTube offer a wealth of knowledge on any topic. Whether studying a technique or purchasing new equipment, I frequently utilize the opinions, reviews, and advice to make decisions and learn more. Also, take advantage of Meetup or photography groups. I’ve been able to learn aspects of the field that would have take a lot of time to master or even by knowledgeable about. In most cases, other advice….shooting in Manual and shoot Raw images. It’s the best way to control and understand your output.

What are you most excited about these days?
I am in the process of collaborating with a colleague and her business, EventPhotoCube. I am excited about the potential of our partnership and look forward to growing both of our businesses over the upcoming year.
