Today we’d like to introduce you to Terence Steele.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Terence. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a graduate of the University of Georgia and that’s where I first found an interest in theater and film. When I first arrived at UGA, I wanted to be a journalist; but my freshman year I saw an audition for the play “The Talented Tenth” by Richard Wesley. I had never acted before, but for some reason I was drawn to it and decided to audition.
Luckily I was cast as Mr. Griggs, one of the main supporting characters in the play. From there, I performed in as many plays as I could while at UGA and eventually decided to make the transition from stage to screen and decided to pursue film production as a career. I went on to graduate school to study film production at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. There, I was able to hone my craft and I made a few short films. I started making feature films in 2009 with Prime Factor Films in Atlanta, but I eventually branched off and started Steele Media Group. Since then, I’ve produced two features under the company and we’re working on a third: “Onward & Upward”, a historical documentary about the 9 historically black fraternities and sororities.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. The road’s still not smooth, right now, today. The main challenge with independent film production is funding. The second challenge with independent film is selling the film to a distributor or independently. Not only that, the audience has to buy into the film; if they don’t, the movie loses money.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Steele Media Group story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in independent feature film production. I’m probably most proud of our last project, a historical documentary on the founding of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at the University of Georgia called “The Spirit of ’69”. I hope to be even more proud of our current project “Onward & Upward”. I think we’re set apart from others based on the fact that we focus on features.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I guess I was lucky to have a chance to work on big film productions like “Furious 7”, “The Fate of the Furious”, “Captain America: Civil War”, and others because my mom met one of the directors at the airport one day. Those experiences working on big movie sets were extremely valuable.
