Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Heath.
Stephanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started about three years ago, when I lived in South Florida I was constantly going to concerts and trying to take pictures of bands with my phone hoping I could get a cool photo. Of course, they don’t come out like a professional camera would but I still kept doing it. A few more shows until I just finally decided to go buy a camera. I started going to local shows and started practicing to start building my portfolio and gaining experience. I started getting approved for photo passes at concerts, constantly meeting new people while doing what I love to do. I would go to about three shows a week on average, I was constantly out on the move and discovered bands that I had no idea who they were, but that was the part that excited me..Not knowing what to expect can be rewarding.
I met Beauregard & The Downright and Anthony Crane when they were on tour and stopped by to play at Terra Fermata in Stuart, Florida which was where I lived at the time. I kept in touch with them whenever they came to Florida and finally I went up to visit Atlanta for the first time. Fast forward, I was in love with the culture and art Atlanta has to offer. Two months after staying here for a week I packed up whatever I could and moved away from my entire life to start over and try something new. I was constantly out on the move in Atlanta covering concerts and exploring the different neighborhoods of Atlanta.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Moving up to Atlanta and starting a new chapter of my journey definitely had its highs and lows. I was constantly working whether it was doubles or balancing multiple jobs. Sometimes I’d question if this was the right move for me, and even try to tell myself a philosophical quote to keep the fire burning (lol). Hey, sometimes you find little things that will make you feel better. I miss the beach every day which is hard, but there’s a charm about Atlanta that is so raw that it keeps me here.
I’m constantly traveling, bringing my camera along whether it’s to cover an awesome band out of state or on tour with Anthony Crane I really started getting into photojournalism as well. There’s just so much to see and do, it’s interesting how we as people have created architectural structures, entertainment, anything with a backstory is very intriguing to me.
Stephanie Heath Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am an independent photographer that specializes in concert and event photography. My goal is always to catch the essence of whatever event it is that I am shooting through my series of photos taken throughout the night. I enjoy shooting local bands most of all because I myself started from humble beginnings and so I always like to showcase local talent. I would say that I am most proud of the fact that I moved to ATL knowing virtually no one and was able to start my photographic endeavors on my own.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is defined by constantly challenging yourself and not getting into a “comfort zone.” I feel that nothing makes you feel more alive than stepping out of that “comfort zone.” I’m constantly looking for “what’s next?” for my personal experience. Sometimes the inspiration comes to you, but I’m constantly thinking and looking for my inspiration for my next project or editing style.
