Meet Stephanie Kirkland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Kirkland.

Hi Stephanie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my pursuit of art when I was a child. I was that student that doodled all over my notebooks. I spent afternoons replicating art from comic books as a preteen to be able to master dynamic poses and foreshortening. This continued love led me to pursue a degree in Art.

I attended Auburn in Montgomery, where I majored in Fine Arts and Marketing. This gave me the foundation needed to explore new mediums and styles on my own. I began to fall in love with chalk pastels and acrylic painting. As time went on, Huemanity Studios was born. I initially offered mobile paint parties but as the demand grew, I knew it was time to give the business a real home. We opened the doors to Huemanity Studios and have had the pleasure of sharing art with the community for over two years now.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I opened the doors to Huemanity Studios in March of 2020 not knowing what the future held. Two weeks later, we were all on lockdown due to COVID restrictions. I worried about how the studio would survive. But in the midst of it, one word stuck in my head. Pivot! Don’t lose sight of what you were doing. Instead, find another way to get your art to the masses if they can’t come into the studio.

I began to focus more on take home art kits and virtual parties as a way to deal with the downtime that most people were experiencing. It made a way for designated family time, date nights and allowed you to connect with the outside world in the virtual parties.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in Acrylic painting. I am known for my use of color which is what inspired the business name of “Hue-manity”. I love to use color to tell a story. I am also known for the energy that you experience when you attend an event. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary or just a random weekend. You will come in, become a part of the Huemanity family, and have a great time painting, singing, and dancing along!

I am most proud of the work that we do with children. They are able to come in and explore their creative side. Oftentimes, the children have not gotten much exposure to fine art due to budget cuts in the school systems so it is such a joy for me to be able to play a part in the discovery and exploration of new things.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
As cliche as it sounds, Don’t give up! When things don’t make sense; Don’t give up! When family or friends don’t understand; Don’t give up! Your journey is unique and only you can pursue it!
