Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Carrington.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been playing guitar since 1987, and I began teaching professionally in 2010. I’ve been fascinated with music all my life, and played in bands for years, but I never thought I would be able to make a career out of music–that is, until I found myself laid off in my previous career when the company I worked for folded during the recession.
So I decided to take the plunge and use the opportunity to put my years of musical experience to work for me, and I started Stephen’s Guitar Lessons. Since then, I’ve given thousands of lessons, and I look forward to many thousands more!
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting with zero students, and initially having little presence outside of a simple website and a Craigslist ad, I would say that building a student base has been the biggest struggle…not least because I started out during a recession. But through trials and errors–and some great successes as well–I’ve been able to achieve a student load that’s near the “full” point more often than not.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Stephen’s Guitar Lessons – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I offer guitar lessons from my home studio here in Marietta. I specialize in rock and blues, and other blues-based genres–so I am well-versed in country, metal, pop, etc.
I think what sets me apart from my competition is my level of professionalism. This isn’t something that I’m planning to do until I can get back to that previous career; this IS my career (I only wish I had pursued it sooner!). I take great pride in what I do, and in being organized and reliable, and I feel that my students get a better experience because of it.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Marietta is my hometown, and so it’s where I feel most comfortable; what more could you want in a place to live?
I would have to say that, like most folks that live in metro Atlanta, traffic is the thing I like the least about this area. But I do feel very fortunate that I don’t have any commute at all with my job!
