Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Scott.
Stephen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey began in 2007 when I began my studies at Southern Polytechnic State University as a student of Construction Management. In 2010, I received my Bachelor’s degree and began working at a local concrete construction company to get some hands-on experience in the construction field. It was while working for this company that I developed a liking for concrete. Nevertheless, because I was still inexperienced at the time, I spent my first several years at this company doing hard manual labor. After a little over 1 year, I decided to take on a few small jobs on the side. I wanted to begin trying to branch out on my own, but having little experience handling the business side of concrete, it took a while for my small jobs to develop. So, for about 3 years I had a small job here and there, but nothing major. It wasn’t until 2014 that I really began to learn the business better, and also became a more skilled craftsman. I received more jobs that year than I did my first three years combined! In the years following, my business continued to grow. Now in 2017, I am proud of what I’ve accomplished thus far, but I am still looking to create and even brighter future for Master Paving Company.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No it has not been a smooth road at all. In fact, it’s been a very bumpy road. When I first started, I was underestimating jobs, and spending too much time on each job, which caused me to lose a lot of money. My inexperience caused me to have to learn a lot of what I know about concrete the hard way. No contractor likes to talk about those experiences, but they are part of what separates a good contractor from a great one.

Success means never quitting. It means persevering during tough times, always pushing yourself, and staying confident. We’ve set very high goals at Master Paving Company, and I consider us successful as long as we are moving towards them.
