Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven McRoyal and Kimberly McRoyal.
Steven and Kimberly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Just like many other black millennials, we didn’t have a blueprint for successful adulthood, let alone a successful marriage growing up. In fact, we were well on our way to being another statistic—two black teenage parents surrounded by family members deep-rooted with toxic and dysfunctional relationships. Infidelity, drug abuse, physical altercations, emotional and financially draining marriages were the norm in our community and our circle. For as long as we can remember, we wanted to know why some people struggle to break free of these generational curses while others prosper, build healthy marriages, create their own rules, and lead happy, successful lives.
Married young, we found ourselves soon after with three kids fighting some of those curses on our own. We didn’t fit traditional marriage roles, LIKE AT ALL, and no matter how many times our parents or our pastor tried to put us in those boxes, we just wouldn’t fit. We found ourselves struggling to figure out how NOT to lose our individuality while juggling our new roles of husband and wife, beginning our careers, finishing college degrees, and parenting our children (not to mention one with a disability). The stress of it all took its toll on our marriage until we started praying for clarity, direction, and purpose and moved our little family 700 miles away from Chicago to Atlanta.
We knew we didn’t want to be like everyone else. We refused to be the stereotype or a statistic. We were going to do life on our terms. After almost 20 years together, we knew we had learned the hard way so others wouldn’t have to. So we created Millennial Married. A relationship blog meant to inspire, entertain and educate millennials of color to change the narrative on how we view, create, and maintain our relationships turned into a culturally conscious digital platform that empowers millions. Through our relationship blog, online courses, and podcast, we can show others that we can be young, dope AF, pursue our passions, turn up together, be spiritual, raise families, and make it look good. WE ARE THE CULTURE, and together WE have the power to break stereotypes.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were lots of challenges along the way. When we first started in true entrepreneur fashion, we quit our jobs and moved to Madison, Georgia, with like cows, two-lane highways, and we were 30 minutes from everything. To our surprise, there was very limited access to the Internet. Turns out, starting an Internet-based business with limited internet is very difficult lol.
Many of our family members and friends had no idea what we were talking about and could not see the vision for the platform. Since there were no blueprints to follow for black love pages at the time that showed the images that we had in mind, there were lots of questions of how to get people involved with supporting a new way of viewing our relationships and making marriage seem less of a duty. It took lots of time to build and get like-minded people involved and be a part of the community.
Please tell us about Millennial Married.
Millennial Married is a culturally conscious digital platform designed to inspire, entertain, empower and educate millennials of color to change the narrative on how we view, create and maintain our relationships. Through our relationship blog, online courses, and podcast, we are able to show others that no matter what obstacles life may throw at you or what chapters that may contribute to your story you have the power to write your own ending. We are also launching a private membership where members have access to valuable masterclasses, workbooks and peer to peer assistance no matter where you are in your relationship journey.
We’re most proud that our platform is used to have powerful conversations and share stories that inspire others to take action or see a different perspective other than their own. What sets us apart from other platforms is that we bridge the gap between Black Love and culture, making marriage socially acceptable and letting others know its actually pretty dope.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Steve’s favorite childhood memories include family gatherings. He always had a large, close-knit family, so holidays were lit. Kim’s favorite childhood memory is when her father (a truck driver) would come home after being gone on the road. He always made sure to bring home laughs, gifts, and we’d always get to eat fast food.
