Meet Summer King of Mosaic Minds Art Academy in Lilburn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Summer King.

Summer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Mosaic Minds Art Academy was founded on the belief that it is NECESSARY that kids be exposed to the arts. With art being removed from schools and removing the “A” from STEAM, I decided to be proactive. I started in a one-room classroom with less than 400 sq ft and three students. I worked very very hard to provide high-quality art enrichment. I can’t emphasize enough that we are not an Arts and Crafts kind of art school, We provide art enrichment where students learn history, terminology, and technique. Through hard work and good service, we have grown from 3 students to 70 students. Fast forward three years we recently opened our largest building ever, 1800 sq ft of space for our Visual and Performing Arts Academy.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There is no testimony without a test. This has definitely not been a smooth road. There was a lot of sacrifices involved. I’m a mom so constantly finding the balance has been a struggle. Good days and not so good days, Great months and not so great months. Because the business side is so time-consuming, I don’t have alot of time to be creative. But I understand that it’s necessary. I am still very grateful for the opportunity to make a living following my dream.

Please tell us about Mosaic Minds Art Academy.
Mosaic Minds is a Visual and Performing Arts school. Our most popular workshops are Comic Art, Anime and Fashion Design. Those classes fill up FAST. We just introduced Vocal training and Drama workshops and we are very excited. Homeschool students enjoy our fun history-based projects and our Art Enrichment classes set us apart from the competition. We make sure our students learn art terms and history along with the technique. We do not do any arts and crafts. We also offer themed Paint and Sips for adults both mobile and in our studio. Our Art Summer Camps are like no other in the area.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My most vivid memories are when this dream started. I was raised by strict Jamaican grandparents in The Bronx, New York. I wasn’t allowed to go far from home. About two blocks away from my home was The Bronx Museum of the Arts. I would just go in and get caught up in the exhibits for hours. Installation art was my favorite. They had an after-school art program that I begged my grandparents to let me join. Thats when I fell in love with Art. My teenage years were spent in Greenwich Village and LES getting exposed to the art scene. I joined all kinds of Art clubs and I knew that my future would involve art in some way.
