Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric.
Eric, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
They say that immigrants are the backbone of the US economy. Our original founders started by nickel and diming in the trenches of flea markets. They worked day shifts selling off-brand clothes and moonlighted night shifts as janitors. What started off as a small flea market vendor grew into a large wholesale business.
Eventually, the landscape of apparel changed and the business also needed a new direction. The founders brought in their son, a second-generation, American born, hip-hop fanatic. In today’s era of social media, he was able to utilize the internet to connect the culture with the clothes.
Today, Superline Wholesale is the premier wholesaler of all things urban apparel. We are the only wholesaler that has no minimums, no resaler license required, and sell in the open-stock format. We pride ourselves in authentically caring about the urban community and do our best to provide the community with the tools to develop more black owners and entrepreneurs.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
60% of second-generation businesses fail. As the landscape of an industry evolves, it is difficult for a business to also evolve. Ten years ago, wholesalers protected the industry by selling to select business owners and utilized resalers license and business tax id’s to safeguard their inventory from smaller brands. However, in today’s era of personal and promotional branding, we pivoted our business model to cater to large retail chain stores all the way down to small start-up brands. Although the transition was tough, we learned the art of pivoting and we now consider that as one of our core competencies.
Also, most of these wholesalers in our area are Asian-owned but cater to the urban market. For years, we made a living “bootlegging” and “copying” ideas and trends without having genuine ownership in that culture. As new management came in, we recognized the difficulties of balancing commerce and ethics. We quickly shifted our mindset. In an era of fast fashion, our mission is to supply the best blank apparel canvases for black entrepreneurs and creatives so that they can take ownership of their own culture.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Superline Wholesale – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Superline Wholesale is the premier wholesaler of all things urban apparel. We specialize in providing wholesale blank basics for other brands, creatives, and entrepreneurs to use and to repurpose. Essentially we’re in the business of selling blank mixtapes to artists who put their music and culture on them. While we wholesale third party brands, we also manufacture and curate our own brands – most notability known for our Solid Basics brand. Solid Basics is our in-house brand that specializes in quality blank garments at an affordable price and is designed for the culture in mind.
Most wholesalers have large minimums and require loads of paperwork to get access to their inventory. However, we are the only ones who have no minimums and accept walk-ins. We understand that not everyone is fortunate enough to have access to capital. Therefore, it is important that we cherish and help smaller brands. We offer wholesale pricing to everyone and still offer competitive prices to larger more established brands.
We are an Asian-Owned company but we make it a priority to bring value and help the black community. As our products cater to a more urban audience, we value the social responsibility to help black creatives, entrepreneurs, and brands develop ownership of their own culture. Instead of copying trends, our goal is to empower the trendsetters with the best wholesale basics so that they can become owners themselves.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our goal is to continue to expand in our product offerings – more colors, more sizings, and more options. We also want to do a better job of connecting with the black community. Black people are undoubtedly the most creative people in the world. They make the best music, the best dances, and the best clothes. I think Virgil Abloh is a testament to that. Our mission is to continue to equip the community with the best basics so that we can help develop more successful black owners and entrepreneurs.
