Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Carpenter.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My golden rule ~ “Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do that.”
The truth is, I needed CarpenterOne80. I had a secret that I planned to be buried with until the day came when I was asked a question. “You say you would die for your kids, but would you change for them?” My answer was yes. I am a recovering disordered eater and had years where I would starve, binge, purge/over-exercise to outrun my fork. I did this since high school. I realized I needed to change to break the cycle for my daughters. If I kept going, they would end up like me.
I started my journey years ago, I didn’t know what I was doing. I only knew where I wanted to get to and that I absolutely had to figure it out. My life and my daughter’s lives depended on it. This was no small undertaking, the studying, learning, practicing, applying, all took many hours a day and years of my life.
I didn’t plan to do more than just help me and my girls, but your message is in your mess. I realized with 2/3 of the population overweight, a health crisis, and lack of understanding that I had a mission to clear up food confusion so that others could find food peace and win at losing weight. This was the birth of the company CarpenterOne80.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been anything but a smooth road to launching a company. I was completely unaware of the amount of work that was involved. I was buried for weeks and months in google docs, often typing until the pads of my fingers were sore. There was a mantra that I held onto, “Anyone who has a business that you admire paid the price in overcoming fear and existing in an uncomfortable state.” I found daily strength in that quote.
I never struggled with content or what program and message to provide next to my clients. I ran into roadblocks with technology. My husband and I decided we would build CarpenterOne80 at the speed of cash. That meant, rather than take out a business loan to hire a marketing firm to lessen the load, we would do it ourselves. Often, when you are strong in one area (communicating in my case) there is an equal weakness (mine would be technology). I hired an excellent graphic design artist to help me with branding, the next step was hiring a digital firm to build my website. I had the map for this business in my head and on google docs, but bringing it to life with technology was difficult. It took a long time to integrate the right software. I move fast, but setting the right foundation was a much slower process than I expected. Quality takes time, getting the graphic right, takes time. The struggle was that I felt a sense of urgency to bring this business to the market.
Finally, the largest hurdle. The mind. It is normal when putting your best effort and heart and soul behind such a big project to feel fear and inadequacy. The mind can be the thing that keeps great ideas from being just that, ideas.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about CarpenterOne80 – what should we know?
I created CarpenterOne80 to equip people to lose weight while living a lifestyle they love. I specialize in weight loss/weight management & am known for SOS (Suz on your Shoulder). SOS IS A BITE-SIZED NUTRITION COURSE BROKEN INTO DAILY 2-3 minute AUDIO MESSAGES OF WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW RIGHT NOW, IN THE RIGHT ORDER TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE. It is a subscription of $15 a month that works to create new habits and put an end to scale jail.
People are wasting a lot of time and money (on programs and groceries) and not getting results. Most people are confused and overwhelmed about what to eat and why. When you don’t understand why it’s harder to make the consistent changes necessary to lose weight and have permanent results. When you understand WHY, eating any other way becomes illogical. It’s important to understand but there was still something else.
I am obsessed with empowering people to pursue weight loss and END dieting. The key piece to my client’s success is frequent access to me. It’s the teaching, encouraging, belief in their success, the expectation for results, positivity, and relentless consistency in messaging that helps to create new habits in their lives. It takes practice, knowledge, success, and TIME (66 days) to make a new habit. Information in one short blast does not last. We need community and TIME to create a new habit that will lead to a permanent lifestyle change. I LOVE helping people regain their confidence that was lost under the unnecessary weight.
What sets me apart is that I have the ability to take science and explain it in a relevant way that a first-grader would understand. Most people don’t want to take the time to sort through the internet for the real answers, it is time-consuming and overwhelming. I provide practical steps (food/groceries/recipes) that get people results. I am proud that this is a company that is not a fad but gives a real science-based education that is FUN and will turn each person’s health around. We are helping people find food peace, restore their health, and empowering them to maintain their weight. CarpenterOne80 will also offer 1:1 coaching and virtual courses.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
It is essential that I continue to provide encouragement, support, and consistency. We all need mentors and role models to teach and inspire us toward change or improvement. It is my job to be authentic in my health journey and share it with others. When I educate someone, they become empowered. Once someone feels empowered to do something on their own, they become inspired. It is when you reach inspired that you help others and eating any other way is illogical. I see the food peace that I teach going past the clients that work directly with CarpenterOne80 to their families, friends, and community.
